EU energy efficiency regulations alarmed the entire 8K industry, the energy efficiency regulations will 8K TVs (and microLED-based displays) power consumption limits set very low, and the current market of 8K TVs are unable to meet this standard, meaning that these devices can not be sold in the EU.

According to Forbes, in response to the new regulations, which took effect on March 1, Samsung has come up with a trick to turn on Eco mode for its 8K TVs by default. In this mode, the brightness and image quality of Samsung’s 8K TVs will be significantly reduced, thus keeping power consumption within the compliance range and smoothly sold in the EU. Of course, users can change to normal brightness mode through a number of options.

The regulation stipulates that the energy efficiency index (EEI) of 8K TVs and microLED-based displays cannot exceed 0.9, the same as that of 4K TVs. The EEI is a number calculated based on screen area and power consumption, and the 8K Association has confirmed that no 8K TVs are currently capable of achieving this level of energy efficiency and will therefore be banned from sale in the EU market.
