According to foreign technology media VideoCardZ, ASRock stated in the press release of the Z790 Phantom Gaming NOVA motherboard that it is ready for higher power consumption CPUs.

ASRock mentioned “more power hungry future CPUs” in the press release, which is as follows:

ASRock launched a brand new PHANTOM GAMING series motherboard today, the high-end model is Z790 NOVA WiFi7. NOVA represents the dazzling light and energy of the explosion, which can bring players a surging gaming experience.

The new motherboard supports Wi-Fi 7 as well as 5Gbps LAN for the fastest internet connection possible, and supports future higher power CPUs.

ASRock confirmed that the Z790 NOVA motherboard adopts 20+1+1 SPS Dr.MOS power supply design.

The LGA 1700 socket supports Intel’s 12th generation Alder Lake and 13th generation Raptor Lake CPUs, and the chances of Meteor Lake entering the desktop platform in the future are very small, so the “higher power consumption CPU” here should refer to Raptor Lake Refresh.

It was previously reported that Intel planned to provide DLVR (Digital Linear Voltage Regulator) for 13th generation processors, but then confirmed that it was disabled on the 13th generation / 700 series platform, so Raptor Lake Refresh is likely to be equipped with DLVR.

It is reported that Intel plans to launch Raptor Lake Refresh in the second half of this year, with a clock frequency of 6.2GHz-6.5GHz.

The famous overclocking enthusiast Allen ‘Splave’ Golibersuch overclocked the Core i9-13900K processor to 8.2GHz under the cooling blessing of liquid nitrogen (LN2) in the finals of the Intel Creator Challenge. This 13th-generation Core desktop flagship processor will go on sale on October 20.

The Core i9-13900K is a 24-core processor with 8 P-core and 16 E-core. Thanks to Intel’s “Thermal Velocity Boost” (TVB) technology, the chip is capable of a maximum core frequency of 5.8 GHz. Splave overclocks the Core i9-13900K to 8.2 GHz, a 41% increase over Intel’s official acceleration frequency.

The Core i9-13900K shows tremendous overclocking potential, compared to the previous generation Core i9-12900K which only reached 7.6 GHz, the Core i9-13900K breaks the record of the Core i9-12900K by 8%.

AMD’s Zen 4 processors also have strong overclocking capabilities. For example, the single-core frequency of the Ryzen 9 7950X was recently overclocked to up to 7.2 GHz, and the frequency of all cores was up to 6.5 GHz. However, according to HWBot, 7.4 GHz (7,471.96 MHz) is the highest value reached by the Ryzen 9 7950X. As a result, the Core i9-13900K clocks in about 11% higher than the Ryzen 9 7950X.

Whether the 13th generation Core processor can continue to dominate the overclocking rankings will be worthy of attention. AMD’s outdated FX-series chips are known for their super-overclocking abilities, and the FX-8370 still holds the record for top overclocking at 8.7 GHz (8722.78 MHz), a feat from 2014.

While Intel and AMD continue to compete with each other in the overclocking game, consumers care more about out-of-the-box performance.

As the release date nears, details about Intel’s 13th generation Raptor Lake CPUs are coming to light online. Earlier today, @TUM_APISAK took to Twitter to share a screenshot of a web page indicating that someone has uploaded benchmark scores for an ES version of the processor to CPU-Z’s database.

Judging from the specs, this CPU should be an ES version of the Core i9-13900K – with a maximum multiplier of only 50x and a clock rate of no more than 5 GHz with the external frequency locked at 100 MHz.

The core configuration is 8P+16E (24C/32T), and thanks to the extra energy-efficient cores, its multi-threaded performance (1400+) still exceeds the average score of the 8P+8E (16C/24T) 12th-gen Alder Lake Core i9-12900K.

(Portal: CPU-Z)

In the single-threaded test, the ES version of the i9-13900K outperformed the i9-12900KF, but was slightly behind the i9-12900K.

It should be noted, however, that the test platform used an MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4 motherboard with a CL 19 latency 32GB @ DDR4-2666 system memory (instead of a higher frequency).

However, even with the lower processor/memory frequencies and the Windows 10 operating system, which has poor support for hybrid CPU architectures, the P-core/E-core still has 4.99 / 2.99 GHz cores.

In addition, the ES version of the processor topped 100°C during testing, meaning it may have hit the temperature wall. I’m sure the retail SKU, which will be officially released this fall, will bring us even more surprises.
