Reuters reported that the iPhone 14 models include a Qualcomm chip that can talk to satellites, as well as an additional custom-designed RF chip and related software from Apple, according to an analysis by iFixit and an Apple statement. A major new feature of Apple’s iPhone 14 series release is the ability to connect to satellites to send emergency messages in the absence of WiFi or cellular data connections, the report said.

Apple said earlier this month that the iPhone 14 model would include new hardware that would make the emergency messaging service possible. The company plans to enable the service through a software update in November but did not provide details about the satellite-specific hardware.

The report noted that iFixit is a San Luis Obispo, California-based company that disassembles iPhones and other consumer electronics to assess how difficult they are to repair. The company disassembled the iPhone 14 Pro Max model on Friday and found the Qualcomm X65 modem chip.

The Qualcomm chip provides 5G connectivity for cellular networks but can also use the so-called n53 band, a band used by satellites from Globalstar (GSAT.A). Globalstar announced a deal earlier this month that will see Apple take up to 85 percent of its satellite network capacity to enable emergency messaging for its new models.

Apple said in a statement to Reuters on Saturday that there is additional proprietary hardware and software for the new messaging capabilities in the iPhone 14.

In addition, Apple said in the statement, “iPhone 14 includes custom RF components and new software designed entirely by Apple that together enable emergency assistance via satellite on the new iPhone 14 models.”

Qualcomm, however, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
