According to documents seen by Windows Latest, Qualcomm internally refers to “Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4” as “Hamoa” and the processor uses an improved ARM core to give it an advantage over its predecessor. These new cores were likely developed by engineers at Nuvia, a company acquired by Qualcomm.

Windows Latest has discovered a new QRD listing that shows Qualcomm’s most powerful Oryon prototype has 12 cores and up to 16GB of memory. New running scores show that “Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4” is becoming a strong rival to Apple’s M2 chip.

However, it’s worth noting that this score was achieved under x86 emulation, not x64. While older versions of Geekbench may have some inaccuracies, the results are still stunning.

A direct comparison between the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 and the Apple M2 chip yielded the following results:

Apple M2 (MacBook Pro, 16-inch, 2023):

However, some other Apple M2 benchmarks show that the Snapdragon 8cx is catching up in multi-core performance:

It is noted that although the performance of Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 is not exactly equivalent to Apple’s M2 chip, it is getting closer, especially in terms of multi-core performance. Snapdragon’s single-core performance lags significantly behind the Apple M2’s, but the gap in multi-core performance is smaller.

The processor supports discrete GPUs connected via eight PCIe 4.0 lanes, as well as PCIe 4.0 SSDs and UFS 4.0 flash memory. For IO, the chip supports two USB 3.1 10Gbps ports, and three USB 4 (Thunderbolt 4) ports with DisplayPort 1.4a support. In addition, the chip’s display output has been greatly improved, the chip can output up to 5K + 4K + 4K resolution at the same time.

Qualcomm has been testing the Snapdragon 8cx Gen4 with a 10-inch screen development device since November 2022, which could mean that Qualcomm intends to use the Snapdragon 8cx Gen4 processor in a small-screen laptop or 2-in-1 device, sources said.
