In a report published on May 23, ChargingHeads.com said that the iPhone 15 series released by Apple this fall will be open to 15W wireless fast charging. Its sister site ChargerLAB has shared more details in a report released today.

Wireless charging for the iPhone is available in 7.5W and 15W, and 15W wireless charging is only available on products that integrate Apple’s official MagSafe module. In addition to Apple’s existing MFi, the company is also promoting the “MFM” accessory certification system, which severely limits MagSafe accessories.

Apple will support both Qi2 and MagSafe wireless charging protocols in the iPhone 15 series, and recommends Qi2 as a compatible wireless charging technology for the iPhone.

The media has learned from supply chain channels that the wholesale price of Apple’s MagSafe module is about $16, thus pushing up the cost and price of the accessory.

The new Qi2 wireless charging module is offered at less than a third of the price of Apple’s MagSafe module, and manufacturers are not required to join MFi membership. That means more manufacturers are coming out with cheaper, faster wireless charging accessories for iPhone.

All iPhones that support wireless charging will be compatible with the Qi2 standard, but Apple hasn’t announced the exact speed yet, but it’s safe to assume it will be faster than the current 7.5W.

Not only Apple devices but also Android phones can take advantage of this technology to accelerate the popularity of wireless charging.

ChargerLAB also said that the Qi2 standard will have the following highlights:

The addition of on-chip authentication (OCA). In addition to the host controller, the transmitter (TX) will also need to be equipped with a dedicated authentication chip.

Qi2 MPP testing is required to achieve 15W wireless fast charging.

Qi2 compliance testing requires the purchase of new test equipment.

ChargerLAB also found in the report that Apple is included in the newly announced WPC Steering Committee, which shows its importance in promoting the Qi2 standard.

ChargerLAB believes that Apple’s push for Qi2 is due to the fact that, unlike the MFi standard, both Qi2 and PD were initiated by an Apple-led industry consortium, are widely used by Apple, and are becoming industry standards.

The wireless charging industry, including master chips, MOSFETs, MLCCs, charging coils, magnets, ferrite chips, labs, factories, brand owners and distributors will also benefit from this.

Qi2 Wireless Charging Alliance learned that on April 19, with the “Qi v.2.0 interface specification” approved by the WPC Wireless Charging Alliance Council, the Qi2 standard has been officially released.

The WPC Wireless Charging Consortium says that the Qi2 (“Qi” pronounced “gas”) standard will replace its predecessor, Qi and that the necessary work for quality assurance, certification testing and product registration is being completed, with Qi2 products expected to hit the market by the end of 2023. The Qi2 product is expected to hit the market in time for the holiday season in late 2023.

Consumers everywhere are looking for more energy-efficient, sustainable products,” said Paul Struhsaker, executive director of the WPC Wireless Charging Consortium. “The perfect alignment achieved by Qi2 improves energy efficiency by reducing the amount of energy lost when the phone is not aligned with the charger. In addition, while wired chargers need to be replaced from time to time due to the vulnerability of plugs to breakage and the stresses placed on charging cables during daily use, Qi2 reduces the amount of landfill waste generated by replacing wired chargers.”

Compared to the current Qi standard, Qi2 uses magnetic power mapping technology that is claimed to improve energy efficiency by ensuring a perfect match between the device and the charger. qi2 will support the industry in developing faster wireless charging technology while ensuring that the charging process is always safe and does not shorten battery life or damage the receiver.

In addition, instead of requiring a flat-to-flat connection, Qi2 will be able to support new product form factors such as AR / VR headsets with a magnetic locking feature. It will also support new types of the phone back cover magnetic accessories such as external batteries, which means future wireless charging panels from manufacturers like Samsung and OPPO could use technology similar to Apple’s MagSafe.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced today that the next generation Qi wireless charging standard will integrate Apple’s MagSafe magnetic charging function. Qi2 is a new unified wireless charging standard that builds on the MagSafe charging technology provided by Apple.

Qi2 will integrate the Magnetic Power Profile, which means that future wireless charging panels from manufacturers like Samsung and OPPO will use Apple’s MagSafe technology. The technology is now available in the iPhone 12 series and later models.

WPC says Qi2 introduces the Magnetic Power Profile to ensure that phones and other battery-powered mobile products dock perfectly with chargers to improve energy efficiency and speed up charging. qi2 will allow the use of new accessories that cannot be charged using existing flat surface-to-flat devices (flat surface-to-flat surface).

The Qi2 standard will debut later this year and will replace the existing Qi standard. The first Qi2-enabled smartphones and chargers are expected to be available during the Christmas shopping season in 2023.
