Polestar Motors announced today that it has signed a lithium-ion battery unit supply agreement with Korean battery manufacturer SK On to provide batteries for the upcoming Polestar 5 model. The performance four-door GT, based on the Precept concept car, will use SK On’s ultra-long 56cm battery cell, which the official press release states is capable of delivering high energy density, enabling “excellent range”, supporting fast charging and high efficiency discharge, and “excellent safety.”

Officials have not yet given specific range data, but according to previous reports, this model will be equipped with a dual-motor, all-wheel drive power system with a power of up to 650 kilowatts and a torque of 900 Newton meters. At the same time, the target cruising range may be as high as 373 miles (about 600 kilometers).

The Polestar 5 is currently scheduled to be produced in 2025, which is a delay from the 2024 previously hinted at.

In 2021, SK Group invested in Polestar Motors through a new mobility fund and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) “to strengthen their cooperation in the field of electric vehicles.” In other words, in addition to LG Energy Solution and CATL , more Polestar cars may be equipped with SK On batteries in the future.

Polestar Motors sold nearly 14,000 pure electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2023, and its plan for 2023 is to deliver 60,000-70,000 vehicles.

The 4-door Polestar 5 had some company when it was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Alongside the Polestar 5, the company also put to the roads for the first time its new upcoming model the O2 electric roadster.

Polestar O2 Roadster: aerodynamic looks

The O2 roadster has a splendid aerodynamic cast that sits on 22-inch wheels. The aerodynamic design has been created to improve airflow and minimize turbulence behind the car during drives. The company claims that the car would have capabilities no lesser than a supercar thanks to the platform it uses. A fixed retracting roof keeps the car stouter than Polestar 5 and also the wheelbase is smaller by 400nm. This has been made possible by giving away the ‘foot garage’ from the platform, to create some more leg room at the rear.

Polestar O2 Roadster goes green

Polestar has kept sustainability in mind while designing and choosing the materials for the car. A new thermoplastic mono-material is used at the base of the car for various components. Polestar has tried to use as much recycled materials in the car as has been possible. This includes the aluminum shells as well as the use of recycled polyester for the soft interior materials.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said, “The propulsion of an electric drivetrain is great for a sports car. And then to do it when an open roof concept, when everybody dreams about ‘the fresh air, the breeze, being closer to nature’ – it’s a perfect fit to have that with an electric drivetrain, and not only have fresh air when you arrive at it, but you’ll leave it for the people behind you”.

Polestar O2 Roadster: Release date

The appearance of O2 at the Goodwood festival was the first time that the car was seen in the open by the public. However, the car would be a reality on the roads only after 2025, as confirmed by Ingenlath. Currently, Polestar seems to be focussing only on Polestar 3 SUV. Polestar 4 would soon follow it in early 2023 and the 4-door Polestar 5, has been planned for 2024.

For some time now, electric cars have been pushing the limits of performance, with high-end offerings like the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S Plaid rivaling supercars for acceleration, and Polestar promises to continue this trend with the release of the Polestar 5. Polestar 5 is said to be the production version of the Precept concept, which was first unveiled in 2020.

Polestar 5 debuts at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. the Precept concept has the look of a luxury sedan, but the production version is expected to emphasize daily driving dynamics over raw speed. However, judging from Polestar’s announcement about the production version of the car, its new model will make a huge impact.

This may not come as a surprise to Polestar enthusiasts, and the announcement didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. The Chinese-European automaker has been documenting the evolution from the Precept to the Polestar 5 on its YouTube channel – for nearly a year. Now, with the announcement of the car’s specifications, there may be a sense that the final piece of the puzzle is in place and everyone can get properly excited.

Polestar’s new electric car is described as a “high-performance electric four-door GT with proper sports car credentials,” and it’s not just talk. Put your foot down and you can step on one that produces a whopping 884 horsepower. A massive 663 lb-ft of torque then helps the horsepower meet the demands of the road and provide impressive traction. The electric car maker says the car’s performance has been enhanced by combining powerful electric motor engineering capabilities with advances in lightweight platform technology.

Polestar executives are excited about the car their company has created, with Pete Allen, Polestar’s UK Head of Research and Development, describing the car as “a superb four-door GT and a true Polestar at its heart.” Jörg Brandscheid, chief technology officer and head of R&D, said the Polestar 5’s powertrain will be a new brand benchmark for its high-performance cars, while company CEO Thomas Ingenlath said the car’s progressive design and advanced engineering set the tone for Polestar’s future.

Unfortunately, there is no information yet on top speed or 100 km acceleration time, but attendees of the Goodwood Festival of Speed will get a glimpse of the Polestar 5’s performance between June 23 and 26.
