On Wednesday, Sony announced in a PlayStation Blog post that it would be pushing out a 1440p software update to the world. After a period of testing, this feature allows gamers to experience 2K @ 60 / 120 Hz display output. Unfortunately, the VRR variable refresh rate feature (1080p or 2160p only) cannot be enabled in this mode.

In addition to the resolution changes, this update also enables gameslists. In short, this feature allows users to create lists containing up to 15 folders and up to 100 items per list – covering disc, digital or streaming versions.

The update also shows the last activity the player interrupted to easily jump back into the game. Also for those who want to experience 3D audio, it is now easier to switch between 3D Audio and regular stereo sound.

Then there’s a preview feature — PS5 users can conduct a tube search via voice command. For example, you can say “Hey PlayStation! Look up a such-and-such keyword on YouTube” and the app will pop up and perform the search (even while still in the middle of a game).

It should be noted that this voice search (preview) feature is currently only available for PS5 players registered in English-speaking regions (US and UK)

Finally, there are some major upgrades to the PlayStation mobile app for Android / iOS, scheduled to launch later this month.

With the app update, you’ll be able to launch PS Remote Play directly from your phone or tablet — assuming PlayStation 5 is in Rest Mode, of course.

In addition, the PlayStation Mobile App will allow players to request a shared screen session from a friend so they can better watch (or easily coordinate) someone else’s game.

Starting with the resolution, this new update steps up the resolution to 1440p as against the 1080p resolution previously available on the platform. This will better help gamers set their PlayStation 5 console to match the resolution on their monitors or televisions. For now, when using 1440p, gamers should understand that it doesn’t support Variable Refresh Rate (VVR).
