Foreign oil tube digital blogger Marques Brownlee today released the results of the 2022 annual blind test of cell phones, Google Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 Pro are two phones in the blind test results occupying the top two.

Marques Brownlee’s YouTube channel MKBHD is a very well-known digital channel and has held annual mobile phone camera blind test activities for several consecutive years. In previous years, he would share the photos taken by these cameras on social media, and decide whose photo quality is better based on the ratings of netizens. This year, Marques Brownlee also launched a dedicated website for users to browse and rate.

After visiting the site, the user is presented with two photos and asked to choose the better of the two photos. The entire testing process was carried out in a blind test. Users did not know which phone was taken with which photo, and no device information was even displayed after the voting ended. The models tested include:

Huawei Mate 50 Pro

iPhone 14 Pro

Moto Edge 30 Ultra

Nothing Phone (1)

OnePlus 10 Pro

OPPO Find X5 Pro

Google Pixel 6a

realme 10 Pro+

Asus ROG Phone 6

Apple iPhone SE

Google Pixel 7 Pro

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Sony Xperia 1 IV

Xiaomi 12s Ultra

Asus Zenfone 9

vivo X80 Pro+

Based on the user’s choices, the site then ranks the categories “Best Overall,” “Best HDR,” and “Best Portrait.”

The “best overall” device in 2022 was won by the Pixel 6a, compared to last year’s Pixel 5a, with the Pixel 7 Pro taking second place in the category and the Asus Zenfone 9 in third. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra came in fifth. The highest-ranked device for Best Standard shooting is the OPPO Find X5 Pro, and the Pixel 7 Pro for Best Portrait.

The next step is the hobby knife test. The sides of the device are metal, but the buttons are plastic. The camera cover is similarly plastic, with the lens surviving down but not the rest of the frame. To prove it, unlike the glass panel of the Google Pixel 6 Pro, the back of this Pixel smartphone has a plastic body, and Youtuber drew a giraffe with a hobby knife.

There will be some hardware similarities between the Google Pixel 6a and the Pixel 6 flagships, but certainly, one camera function may not be exclusive to the Pixel 6a. It appears that the Pixel 6a does not support the Pixel 6 / Pixel 6 Pro’s “Motion Modes” feature for capturing objects moving with distorting effects, as recently discovered code snippets suggest.

Motion Modes sample by Google

The absence of Motion Modes on Pixel 6a was first spotted by Kuba Wojciechowsk. There is a “smoking gun” in the Pixel Tips app that reveals a Motion Mode-related suggestion is programmed not to display on “bluejay” devices—the hardware codename for the future Pixel 6a. The only explanation we can conceive of why the Pixel Tips app would exclude giving tips about Motion Mode on the Pixel 6a is if the smartphone doesn’t have the ability to use those capabilities.

Camera hardware for the Pixel 6a is believed to differ from that of the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro, with the primary sensor expected to continue to be used in the Pixel 6a as it was in last year’s Pixel 5a, though an upgraded ultra-wide sensor may be prevalent. The Sony IMX363 sensor, which is believed to be utilised in the Pixel 6a, is so old that it may be unable to support Motion Mode due to technical limitations. When it’s theoretically possible, Google hasn’t shied away from bringing new functionality to lower-end phones in the past.

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro’s Motion Mode offers two distinct camera functions: Action Pan and Long Exposure. Each of these methods works in an entirely different way to apply motion blur to certain areas of a photograph. While Long Exposure fades a moving subject while holding the rest of the picture in focus, Action Pan mimics the pan shot technique to blur the background, giving the subject a sense of speed. The Pixel 6a might omit these functionalities, which would be a shame.
