The 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 SSD was officially released by Samsung in August of this year, and now the external media has released a review of the product, and the 990 PRO is expected to be available soon.

According to Samsung officials, the Samsung 990 PRO Series Samsung features new V-NAND technology and a newly launched in-house controller that delivers ultra-high speeds in the PCIe 4.0 interface. The SSDs deliver sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s respectively, and random read and write speeds of up to 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS respectively. 55% higher random read and write performance is achieved with the 990 PRO compared to the 980 PRO.

Samsung’s newly designed controller significantly improves the SSD’s power efficiency by up to 50% compared to the 980 PRO. The 990 PRO also offers an additional layer of thermal control with its RGB lighting adding a stylish touch.

Here are the 990 PRO sequential and random read and write speeds as tested by External PC and compared to other brands.

The 990 PRO is expected to be released globally in November this year. The retail price of the 1TB model is $179 (about 1224.36 yuan), and the retail price of the 2TB version is $309 (about 2113.56 yuan). Next year A 4TB model will be available.

Last week, Samsung officially announced the Samsung 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 SSD, which officially states that the 990 PRO fully balances the requirements of high speed, high power efficiency and high reliability with 3D TLC (3bit) particles and new self-developed master control, with sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900MB/s respectively, and random read and write speeds of up to 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS respectively. With the new 3D TLC (3bit) particles and a new proprietary controller, sequential read and write speeds are up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s respectively, while random read and write speeds are up to 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS respectively, a 55% increase in random read and write performance compared to the 980 PRO.

Samsung 990 PRO series products use PCIe 4.0 interface, and the industry’s general perception is that this product will be able to improve the transfer speed of the new PCIe standard PCI Express 5.0, but in fact, Samsung Electronics still maintain the 990 Pro PCI Express 4.0 standard.

In this regard, Samsung Electronics explained, “This is not a product development or technical issues, but simply a judgment based on market conditions.”

Samsung says the newly designed SSD controller is significantly more energy efficient, with a 50 percent improvement compared to the 980 PRO. In addition, the 990 PRO adds a nickel coating to the controller and uses a tabbed heatsink on the drive to ensure stable heat dissipation, while the 990 PRO (cooling version) will also offer an additional layer of heatsink and support for RGB lighting textures.

PCI Express 5.0 is a new standard being released by PCI-SIG in May 2019. It doubles the transfer rate again compared to 4.0, which can now transfer up to approximately 2 GB/s per lane, and Micron’s previous demonstration of 5.0 solid state sequential read and write up to 10 GB/s.

The Samsung 990 PRO will go on sale globally in November this year, with the 1TB model for $179 (about RMB 1224.36) and the 2TB version for $309 (about RMB 2113.56), with the heatsink model being $20 more expensive, and the 4TB model to be launched next year.

However, for the OEM market, Solidigm’s flexible design also supports the availability of the M.2 2230 / 2242 form factor. At the same time, to ensure the best user experience, Solidigm has also invested heavily in storage software.

As an optional but highly recommended Windows tool suite, the company has built Synergy software that incorporates storage drivers and a powerful drive health monitoring tool (free download).

The Solidigm storage driver intelligently identifies high-priority data and keeps important items in the cache by monitoring usage patterns.

In addition to enabling faster reads when drives are filled and supporting host cache management, Sanjay Talreja, general manager of Solidigm’s Client Products and Solutions Division, said.

“Whether it’s playing the latest games, managing your business, or editing your family photos, the cost-effective P41 Plus Series SSDs deliver an excellent experience with the support of innovative software”.

Finally, as the brand’s first SSD product since December 2021, the P41 Plus underscores its commitment to delivering an industry-leading portfolio of storage solutions, including high-performance SSDs, to the client, cloud and data center markets.

For those interested, look for Solidigm demonstrating its innovative solutions at the Flash Memory Summit (FMS 2022) in Santa Clara, CA, August 2-4, at booth #509.

In addition to self-developed ARM/RISC-V system processors, Russia is also enhancing the localization of SSD master chips. Recently, at Innoprom 2022 International Industry Exhibition, the Russian company Kraftway disclosed its self-developed SSD master chip K1942VK018, which is a PCIe 4.0 master control.

The K1942VK018 main control also uses a different core, not ARM but open-source RISC-V architecture, TSMC 28nm HPC + process foundry, support for 3D MLC, TLC flash memory, the future may also support QLC flash memory, including the Kai Man, Micron and even China Changjiang storage flash memory.

The SSD using this master is produced by GS Nanotech in Russia and supports PCIe 4.0 x4 and NVMe 1.4, with a maximum capacity of 16TB, sequential read and write speeds of over 1500MB/s, and 4K random read and write of 200K and 150K IOPS respectively.

However, as a PCIe 4.0 hard drive, the performance of 1.5GB/s is obviously too low, and the published test results are even lower, with only 1GB/s read and less than 500MB/s write, so there are obviously many problems to solve.
