Earlier this month i.e. on July 6, an OPPO Reno2 smartphone, which was launched in 2019, caught fire in India. According to a tweet posted on Twitter by a user named Vamshi, the smartphone allegedly caught fire without any warning while the user was scrolling through the lightweight messaging app WhatsApp – and the phone wasn’t charging.

Later, the user further shared screenshots of their conversation with OPPO India’s customer care service and images of their smartphones, saying that the brand has not taken responsibility for the incident so far.

A statement sent to the user by OPPO Care India seems to say, “Your device was not really burned and was damaged internally. Therefore, we cannot consider it as an explosion case. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our service center.”

However, according to the complainant later, OPPO India did not provide any acknowledgment statement or solution to the problem and now the case is still open for further investigation.

This is certainly not the first example of a smartphone catching fire, though. Earlier this year, in April, an unnamed smartphone caught fire while being transported on an IndiGo aircraft. According to a statement on the matter from the local civil aviation authority, the smartphone suddenly developed an overheated battery and exploded during the flight without being charged. Fortunately, no one was harmed in the process.

Previously, other devices such as the OnePlus Nord 2 have experienced battery overheating and explosions in India, during which the company offered full equipment and medical compensation to users who experienced this ordeal.

To recall, the OPPO Reno 2 is a phone that was launched in August 2019. The smartphone features a 6.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G SoC. it has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, plus a 48-megapixel quad rear camera setup. On the front, there is a motorized pop-up 16MP selfie camera and an under-display optical fingerprint sensor. The phone is powered by a 4000mAh battery that supports 20W fast charging.
