British tech company Nothing plans to launch a new smartphone in the United States to compete directly with Apple’s iPhone, according to a new report.

In an interview with CNBC, Nothing CEO Carl Pei said the startup is in “early conversations” with telecom carriers about launching a new phone in the U.S., but he didn’t name any carriers.

Nothing launched the Nothing Phone(1) smartphone in July in more than 40 markets around the world, including countries in the United Kingdom, Japan, India and continental Europe. At the time, the company said it had no plans for a broad release of the Nothing Phone(1) in the U.S.

“The reason we didn’t release it in the U.S. was that a lot of additional technical support was needed to support all the carriers and the unique customizations they needed to make on top of Android,” Carl Pei explained in an interview. “We didn’t feel we were ready for that before. Now we’re in discussions with some carriers in the U.S. and may launch a future product there.”

Carl Pei also acknowledged that it won’t be easy for Nothing to compete with Apple on U.S. turf. “Android is facing challenges and Apple iOS is becoming more and more dominant. They have a strong monopoly on iMessage and AirDrop, especially in the Z generation, so that’s a growing concern for us.”

“There may come a time when Apple has 80 percent of the entire smartphone market, and that won’t leave enough room for Android-based manufacturers to stay afloat.”

Nothing has sold more than 1 million products worldwide to date, with 600,000 sets of its Nothing Ear (1) headphones sold and 500,000 units of the Nothing Phone (1) shipped.

Nothing expects its revenue to jump more than tenfold by 2022 — from $20 million (about 140 million yuan) in 2021 to $250 million (about 1.752 billion yuan) this year. However, the company is still in the red, which Carl Pei says is due in part to foreign currency exchange movements.

“We pay a lot of our COGS (cost of goods sold) in dollars, but we make money in pounds, euros, Indian rupees — so everything is devalued against the dollar. Our goal is to be profitable by 2024.”

Although it hasn’t been available for a long time, Nothing Phone (1) has recently started rolling out the Nothing OS update version 1.1.2, which mainly brings improvements in the user interface (UI) and charging experience. In addition, the update will allow users to set a default “always on” period and the option to display the fingerprint sensor icon by easily moving the phone when the screen is off.

Given that this v1.1.2 update package is only about 40MB in size, it is clear that it does not contain many major changes. Even so, there are some things worth noting.

First, for first-time users, Nothing Phone (1) now allows you to move the phone slightly with the screen off to find the exact location of the fingerprint sensor.

Secondly, the “Always On” feature, which is said to cause excessive battery consumption, can now be disabled by default during nighttime hours. Of course, users who need to do so can manually enable the feature.

The charging experience on the Nothing Phone (1) is also said to have been improved, with compatibility with more third-party chargers. That way, even if you don’t buy the original accessories, there won’t be much difference in charging performance.

Finally, the v1.1.2 update resolves several Bluetooth codec issues, brings some detailed UI optimizations, and other general bug fixes and stability improvements.

After debuting the Nothing Phone (1) earlier this month, Indian media outlet The Mobile Indian is reporting that Pei Yu’s Nothing appears to be introducing another device to the market this year. The phone is said to be a “lite” version of the Nothing Phone (1), which retains most of the hardware of the Snapdragon 778G+ device.

After months of marketing, Nothing finally debuted its Nothing Phone (1) a few weeks ago. The Pei Yu-run startup’s first attempt at the smartphone market seems to have gone fairly well, despite a few quality control hiccups that popped up.

Now, the company seems to be gearing up for its second smartphone.

According to new reports, Nothing is gearing up to launch a new smartphone after the Nothing Phone (1). The new device is widely considered by insiders to be a “lite” version of the original phone, with a focus on providing essentially the same experience, but at a lower price point.

The new Nothing Phone is said to retain most of the hardware from the Nothing Phone (1). This is said to continue with the Snapdragon 778G+, 6.55-inch FHD+120Hz AMOLED, 50MP rear camera, and 16MP selfie camera. However, this new device will ditch the Glyph backlight bar in favor of a simple glass back. Wireless charging also does not seem to be present.

The new phone could make its debut in India “during the festive season”. This could be a reference to Diwali in late October. Interestingly, however, sources say Nothing denies the existence of such a device. This is interesting because the company has a strong tendency to market its business and rarely tries to remain secretive before releasing a product, and in this case, outright denials are almost meaningless.
