YouTuber @Iskandar Souza and @PauloGomes investigation found that many sellers of mining cards are not honest, they will be somehow mining cards packaged as “new graphics cards” mixed into the market.

While both high-pressure water gun cleaning and ultrasonic + board wash cleaning are said to descale PCBs, the chip part is not so easy to “revive”. Although some burst GPU cores can be replaced, but this is undoubtedly a significant increase in labor costs. In this case, consumers wanting to buy a good color of the mining card is not easy, and now there are “refurbished” memory chips, again deepening the difficulty of distinguishing.

As the picture shows, the GPU cores of some mining cards can still perform well after a long workout, but the chip parts show a distinct yellowish-brown color, which means the surface is darkened, discolored or melted.

Paulo says that trying to identify a used card requires extremely careful inspection, whether it’s a missing sticker or a scratch from a screwdriver that should make you suspicious. However, even though some cards may appear to be new (including the original warranty sticker, which is free of dust or scratches), there’s still a chance they’re not.

By far the easiest area to spot are the signs of aging on the memory and GPU cores, the yellow parts, but there are always a few traders who like to be clever and have even worked out ways to paint the memory chips to make them look newer than they really are.

The good thing is that this hot paint material can be removed, so the chip color is significantly different from the lower color, which means that this is most likely a “refurbished card”, but this way is certainly a test of the consumer’s hands-on ability, after all, you need to remove the heat sink first to check whether the card is artificially colored traces.

It is worth mentioning that the PCB with the GPU core will also have discoloration problems after a long time of mining, although miners can also be refurbished in this way, but because of the high cost, so few miners will do so, most of these people will only be refurbished for the video memory part.

The yellow marks on the memory and GPU cores may be due to prolonged heating or resoldering, but whatever the cause is, it suggests that this card is not new. paulo also showed a number of examples of what a GPU looks like after mining.

It is recommended that if consumers do not have certain identification and hands-on skills, it is recommended to buy the graphics card in the official website channels to avoid the problem of second-hand graphics cards “to hand on the waste”, at least there are problems can also be in the official warranty.

NVIDIA released its Q2 earnings report for fiscal year 23 not long ago, as previously expected, the game business fell 33%, the price of graphics cards fell sharply, and now the inventory backlog is still serious, CEO Huang Renxun said he would work with graphics card manufacturers to adjust prices, graphics card prices are expected to continue to fall in September. The same are facing the problem of inventory adjustment, continue to reduce prices also did not run.

We all know the reason for this wave of graphics card price cuts – the mining market collapsed in the first half of this year, miners are no longer scrambling to buy graphics cards, the number of gamers buying them obviously can’t hold up the graphics card premium, and with the outflow of mining cards into the used graphics card market, the graphics card market can only change.

However, for NVIDIA, they have not been able to clarify the impact of mining cards – they had this attitude when mining cards were soaring, and now that mining cards have fallen and graphics card prices have declined, NVIDIA’s attitude remains the same, as CFO Colette Kress recently re-emphasized.

Colette Kress said that the volatility of cryptocurrencies – including price drops or changes in verification transactions, such as proof of work or proof of equity – has affected and may affect our product demand and our ability to evaluate it in the future.

Colette Kress emphasized that NVIDIA is unable to accurately quantify the extent to which reduced cryptocurrency mining will impact the decline in demand for gaming graphics cards.

Intel’s gaming card business is stumbling, as a new entrant, they still have a lot of pressure to compete with AMD and NVIDIA, but However, in the other GPU business – mining cards, Intel has achieved more than expected, much smoother than gaming cards.

Strictly speaking, Intel launched not a mining card, but an energy-efficient blockchain gas pedal Blockscale ASIC, which claims that the energy efficiency ratio of SHA-256 algorithm mining performance is more than 1000 times that of mainstream GPU graphics cards.

According to the official introduction, Intel Blockscale ASIC uses the Flip-chip LGA 132-ball package style with a size of 7.5 x 7 mm and an operating temperature range of 50-85°C with integrated temperature and voltage sensors.

It has a built-in SHA-256 hardware acceleration unit, a bitcoin mining arithmetic power up to 580GH/s, and power consumption of 4.8-22.7W, which translates into energy efficiency up to 26J/TH.

It supports up to 256 units to form a system, UART serial communication, and variable baud rate of up to 10Mbps.

According to Intel at today’s earnings meeting, the Blockscale ASIC reached an important milestone in the second quarter, shipping revenue-generating products to major customers, and completing data entry to shipment in less than a year.

Intel expects to ship millions of units of the product this year, which was not previously covered in the forecast at the beginning of the year, meaning that these operations were not expected.
