Microsoft’s chopper department is ready for Xbox Live Gold, according to foreign media Windows Central reports, since September 1, Microsoft will cut off has been operating for 21 years of Xbox Live Gold (gold member) service.

Microsoft is reportedly launching a new Xbox Game Pass level as a successor to Xbox Live Gold, called Xbox Game Pass Core, similar to Sony’s “PlayStation Plus Basic” for the PlayStation platform. The Xbox Game Pass Core tier is similar to Sony’s PlayStation Plus Basic tier for the PlayStation platform and will serve as the cheapest option for Xbox gamers, bringing online gaming and other features to Xbox gamers.

Windows Central said that the pricing for Xbox Game Pass Core is the same as Xbox Live Gold, which is still $9.99 per month (about RMB 71.33) and $59.99 per year (about RMB 428.33).

In addition, although the service is called “Xbox Game Pass Core”, in fact, can not use the standard version of the Xbox Game Pass game library, Microsoft plans to provide a “castrated version” of the game library for this level, will contain Microsoft plans to offer a “neutered” library for this tier, which will contain more than 25 games from the Xbox Game Pass library, with updates to the library every few months.

Since Xbox Game Pass Core doesn’t have a “New games on day one” label (the other three Game Pass services do), games such as Stars Hollow won’t actually be in the Core’s library on launch day.

Microsoft will no longer offer exclusive Live Gold discounts on games since Xbox Live Gold will no longer exist, but those who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Core will still receive the discounts available to Game Pass subscribers, the media said.

It is reported that this is Microsoft’s first price adjustment since the launch of Xbox Game Pass in 2017. At present, the price of the US server has increased, but the price of the Hong Kong server has not yet increased. After the price increase, the monthly price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will increase from $14.99 to $16.99, the monthly price of Xbox Game Pass for Console will increase from $9.99 to $10.99, and Microsoft has not changed the price of PC Game Pass.

For current monthly Game Pass members, the new prices will go into effect on August 13th (September 13th in Germany). For users who subscribe to Game Pass with an annual redemption code, the new price will take effect upon renewal. With the exception of a handful of countries including Norway, Chile, Denmark, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia, every market will be affected by the Game Pass price increase.

In addition, starting from August 1, the prices of Xbox Series X consoles in other countries and regions will increase except for the United States, Japan, Chile, Brazil, and Colombia.

Microsoft has previously emphasized that this Game Pass price adjustment has nothing to do with its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, but only to adapt to the local market situation. The price increase of Microsoft Xbox Game Pas has followed the general trend of entertainment subscription service price increases in recent years. Nintendo has since 2018 The price has not been adjusted since the launch of the Switch Online subscription service in 2019, while Sony updated its PlayStation Plus subscription service last year, launching three packages: PlayStation Plus Essential, Plus Extra and Plus Premium for PlayStation users to choose from.

British regulator the Competition and Markets Authority suspects it could raise Xbox Game Pass prices if its Activision Blizzard’s $69 billion merger is approved.

“Subscription prices can be easily modified and Microsoft may have the incentive to do so once it has introduced content as popular as Activision, including CoD.”

In the newly released findings, Microsoft told the CMA that they currently have no plans to raise Game Pass prices, as doing so would be counterproductive and ultimately lead to a decline in subscribers.

“The price of Game Pass will not increase due to the merger, and of course the price increase will not be in exchange for the substantial benefits of the simultaneous release of Activision games on XGP. Considering that Game Pass will continue to be restricted by B2P (buyout games), That’s especially important.”

Microsoft also pointed out that it has previously introduced popular Bethesda content into XGP, but has not raised prices. Microsoft has acquired the ownership of a series of IPs such as “The Elder Scrolls”, “Radiation”, “Doom”, and “Shame” after acquiring ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Company B.

"A merger of Activision and Microsoft would have a classic elimination of the double margin effect, as Microsoft would be able to acquire these games at (opportunity) cost and have an incentive to distribute them more widely and increase Game Pass output. To increase output, Microsoft needs to offer Game Pass at a lower quality-adjusted price.

This is exactly what Microsoft has done in the past by adding content to Game Pass, such as the ZeniMax deal that results in additional content but does not result in a Game Pass subscription price increase. Especially considering that Game Pass users are price sensitive, and a Game Pass price increase will affect all users, especially those who don't value or play COD.

Game Pass subscribers can cancel their subscription at any time after one month of play. Since CoD games are released on an annual basis, any impact will be short-lived, as players who lose enthusiasm for a new version of COD within a few months will leave due to the higher price.

Therefore, any price increase would be counterproductive as it would in turn lead to loss of users. This is completely at odds with the interim findings' assessment of Microsoft's rationale for merging."

Sony has previously argued that if Microsoft and Activision were allowed to merge, their merger would significantly reduce PlayStation’s ability to compete with Xbox and provide Microsoft with an opportunity to raise prices, including for Xbox users (including those transferring from PlayStation). Console and game prices, and increase the price of Game Pass, and reduce innovation and quality.
