Microsoft is developing a native RGB lighting effect management tool for the Win11 system–Dynamic Lighting so that users can control the lighting effects of peripherals without installing third-party applications.

@XenoPanther tweeted on X (Twitter) a few days ago, saying that under the Dynamic Lighting option of the Win11 system settings application, a new “Match my Windows accent color” (Note: Match my Windows theme color) option has been added.

Brandon LeBlanc, a senior program manager for Microsoft’s Windows Insider project team, also tweeted later that the option had been introduced in previous preview versions, but it was not included in the changelog.

Dynamic Lighting provides users and developers with the experience of natively controlling lighting effects devices (which must comply with the HID LampArray standard).

Microsoft said it will work with OEMs and ODMs to deploy open standards, improve device and application interoperability, and improve users’ RGB device and software ecosystems.

Win11 applications can control the device in the foreground or background by calling the API. Users can also customize how the device behaves in Windows Settings.

Microsoft said that it has already cooperated with several equipment manufacturers including Acer, Asus, HP, HyperX, Logitech, Razer and Twinkly, and will further expand the scale in the future.

Microsoft yesterday began to invite members of the Windows Insider project in the Beta channel to test the Windows Copilot feature in the Win11 preview.

Users just need to click the new button on the taskbar (or WIN + C) to start Windows Copilot. Windows Copilot will log in with a Microsoft account or an Azure Active Directory account.

Windows Copilot will appear as a sidebar docked to the right, without overlapping desktop content, and will run independently next to open application windows, allowing users to interact with Windows Copilot at any time.

The Windows Copilot function is currently relatively “rudimentary” and does not even support third-party plug-ins. It was previously reported that Microsoft stated in the Win11 23493 preview that it can currently perform the following tasks:

 "Switch to dark mode."

 "Turn on Do Not Disturb."

 "screenshot."

"Summary for this site." (Activity tab in Microsoft Edge)

"Write a story about a dog who lived on the moon."

"Take me a picture of a serene koi pond and lily pad."

And according to new screenshots spotted by Windows enthusiast Xeno, Windows Copilot will soon support the following features:

Invoke Accessibility: Allows users to access accessibility features in Windows 11 through Windows Copilot.

Clock Service: Countdown etc. can be set through Windows Copilot.

Troubleshooting: Windows Copilot will be able to solve your common PC problems.

Task Manager Services: Copilot may have the ability to end and start services, just not entirely sure yet.

Launch Apps: Ability to launch installed applications using Copilot.

Microsoft recently released the Win11 Build 25905 preview update for Windows Insider members of the Canary channel. One of the highlights is to allow users to uninstall the Cortana voice assistant more easily.

Microsoft previously announced that the Windows standalone application of the Cortana voice assistant will stop support at the end of the year, and it will not affect other platform versions, such as Outlook mobile version, Teams mobile version, etc.

As early as 2014, Microsoft began testing the Cortana virtual assistant. The name comes from the artificial intelligence in the game “Halo” series, and then Cortana was pre-installed in Windows Phone and Windows 10 systems.

However, with Microsoft’s strategic change, Cortana is gradually unbundled from personal user computers and becomes part of the Microsoft 365 office scene.

Here are three ways to delete Cortana in the Win11 system:
Stable Win11 system (also applies to Win10):

Start Terminal as an administrator, and then enter the “widget uninstall Cortana” command (without double quotes), and press Enter, then enter Y and press Enter according to the prompt.
In Win11 Build 25905 Preview:

Open the Start menu, find and right-click Cortana in the list of all apps, select Uninstall and confirm the action.

In other Canary channels, Win11 builds:

Launch the Settings app and go to Installed Apps > Apps, find Cortana and click the button with three dots next to it, select Uninstall and confirm the action.

While Microsoft rarely provides information about the number of devices or users of its Windows operating system or other products, Microsoft yesterday posted a blog saying that Windows has surpassed the 1 billion user mark worldwide.

“The Windows operating system is huge — with more than 1 billion users and a rich PC ecosystem with countless usage patterns, key applications and hardware combinations.”

The company claims that Win11 is “the most reliable version of Windows ever,” saving an average of 6 percent in energy consumption if users follow the recommendations provided in the Win11 Energy Advisory; Windows 11 boot-to-desktop time is reduced by 10 percent, while the impact on launching applications is reduced by at least 50 percent. The impact on launching applications is reduced by at least 50 percent.

In addition, this article provides additional insights. some of the highlights are summarized below and more can be found on the official Microsoft blog

Microsoft performs over a million hours of validation work every day.

Microsoft leverages diagnostic data to enable 2.5 million cab files per day, more than 12 million performance traces per year, and more than 70.4 billion program performance data points.

The new version of Microsoft Teams is twice as fast as the old version, while using half the resources.

Commonly used shell interactions are 15 percent faster.

Microsoft says Win11 has dramatically improved startup speed. Engineers have reduced the time it takes to launch applications by ensuring that the applications users are trying to interact with are responsive and prioritize and reduce conflicts, among other things.

According to the report, Microsoft has also made some optimizations to the default file explorer in the Windows 11 operating system. The company claims that it has improved file batch delete operations by 67% and also improved application startup times.

In addition, Microsoft also highlighted a number of performance improvements they made between February and May 2023.

Foreign technology media Phoronix recently used AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor platform to conduct performance comparison tests on WSL2 and Ubuntu 23.04 on Win11.

The test results show that the native Ubuntu runs more powerfully, but the performance score of Microsoft Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2) is not far behind.

The test results are as follows:

For users who need to use different working environments, the performance of WSL2 on the Win11 system is already quite good.

Overall, the experience of running the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release via WSL2 has been quite pleasant.

Microsoft will expand WSL2 functionality in the future, adding graphics / 3D applications, video acceleration and other functions.

For multi-workload users who don't care much about performance, WSL2 is a good choice.

Windows 11 comes with many new features and improvements, one of which is the File Manager. The File Manager is an important tool for managing and finding files on our computers, and Windows 11’s File Manager has undergone a major makeover with a more modern and clean interface, better performance and more features.

According to sources at Windowslatest, Microsoft is using WinAppSDK (Windows Application Development Kit) to develop a new File Explorer that will allow the File Explorer to use WinUI, a new API and other features. WinUI is a new set of interface styles and controls designed by Microsoft for Windows 11 to make applications look more beautiful and modern.

The new file manager is said to have the following changes:

A redesigned title bar with a modern file directory box, search box, and home button.

Integration with Microsoft 365 to provide recommended files and more detailed file details.

Updated left-hand navigation and details pane for a richer experience.

New "Gallery" area provides a more robust photo browsing experience.

First, the Home page of File Explorer is integrated with Microsoft 365 and will offer recommended files under the Recommended files section. These recommended files will have large thumbnails so that the files can be easily viewed.

The new home page in File Explorer

Second, Microsoft is updating the title bar and moving options such as “New” or “Copy” to the file/folder view below the title. This reduces clutter and leaves room for the search box features, which are also being updated to provide faster results and a modern design.

Microsoft 365 Integration for File Explorer

File Explorer is getting a new “Details” pane that is more touch-friendly and powered by Microsoft 365. Thanks to the Microsoft 365 integration, users can view emails, topics, comments, tags, and more details about files shared in their organization directly in File Explorer.

File Explorer folder view in the details pane

The last major improvement is the addition of a “Gallery” feature to the new File Explorer. This feature allows you to browse through the photos on your computer in File Explorer and has a nice format, similar to modern Windows 11 applications. When you click on the “Gallery” button, it automatically displays a list of photos in the “Pictures” folder sorted by date. You can click on the photos to see their properties in the details pane. You can also select where you want to display the photos by using the Collection drop-down menu.

File Explorer Gallery View

Windows 11’s new File Explorer may arrive in the fall and it will be the biggest update to File Explorer in a decade.

The Windows 11 Dev Preview Build 25300 was released today by Microsoft, and in addition to some of the features mentioned in the official changelog, the preview version has a hidden feature that allows you to end the task process directly in the taskbar operation.

As we know, in Windows 11 and Windows 10, when an application or task is not responding, you need to open Task Manager, find the task name, and then end its process.

In Windows 11 Build 25300, Microsoft has made it easier to kill an entire process or task by allowing users to right-click on any application/process icon directly on the taskbar and quickly kill the process by clicking on the new “End task” option, as shown below.

The “End task” button invokes the same actions currently available through Task Manager and can be seen as a shortcut in Task Manager.

Windows 11 now allows users to kill any process using Task Manager, Command Prompt, PowerShell, and Settings, as long as the name or process identifier (PID) is recognized. Task Manager also comes with a new search bar that makes it easier to identify background processes.

In addition to this hidden feature, Windows 11 Build 25300 also brings a big update to accessibility, with the Live Captioning feature adding support for several new languages, including Chinese (simplified and traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, and more.

Microsoft is also experimenting with different Snap window layout designs, including improving the discoverability of Snap layouts. For example, the updated Snap layout experience now includes icons for the application window and adds descriptive titles to the layout.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft is testing these improvements in the Windows 11 preview, most of which are hidden and can only be enabled when passing code.
