Microsoft Corp. recently announced in a blog post some of the new features added to its OneNote for Windows app in October, including features for users with digital pens, as well as some new layout improvements.

In a blog post, Microsoft said, “When you select the text pen in the Drawing tab, you can convert your handwriting to text as you write and edit your converted notes with natural gestures, such as selecting text with underlining, deleting text with smudging, and more. We’ve also added tools to help you better annotate, handwrite notes, and draw. This includes a brand new drawing tab, improved inking reliability, and a quick help shortcut built specifically for inking!”

OneNote for Windows also adds text prediction, which saves time by trying to show the next possible word or phrase to be typed when the user types some words. This new feature requires a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Additionally, Microsoft has added the Vertical tab option to the View menu in OneNote for Windows.

Finally, Microsoft says that OneNote for Windows will add the previously announced Copilot AI feature in November. Microsoft says:

Copilot in OneNote helps you create, capture, organize, and recall information with more confidence. As your AI-powered note-taking partner, Copilot can draft plans, summarize your notes, generate ideas, create lists, organize information, and more based on your prompts.

It’s important to note that the above features are only available for OneNote for Windows, which is scheduled to stop receiving updates after October 2025 for OneNote for Windows 10.

Microsoft has recently upgraded the OneNote app for iPad, which supports users to use superscripts and subscripts in the process of writing documents and notes so that users can enter footnotes and equations more accurately.

Microsoft has invited members of the Insider project to test it, and it is expected to be available to all users in August this year. Note: other platform versions of OneNote already support superscript and subscript functions.

Cora Chen, a product management intern on the OneNote team at Microsoft, said in a blog post:

We heard your feedback, many of you use superscripts and subscripts a lot in other programs and platforms, and would like to see this feature in OneNote for iPad as well.

Now we are excited to deliver this functionality. You can quickly create accurate equations, logos, footnotes, formulas, and other symbols in your notes using superscripts and subscripts in the Home tab.

According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, Microsoft plans to release an update to OneNote in April this year to improve the product’s ability to protect against “known high-risk” phishing attacks.

The reason why Microsoft is introducing this feature is because TrustWave reported such phishing tools in January this year. Attackers used OneNote’s native .one file format to launch phishing attacks by distributing emails.

Users who open a OneNote attachment see a blurry thumbnail and a “View Document” button. Clicking the button launches a security alert warning the user that opening the attachment may harm the computer and data. The user who clicked the OK button executed a WSF file in OneNote.

WSF, Windows Script File, used by Microsoft Windows Script Host. If the user ignores the security warning, the WSF file embedded in OneNote runs a PowerShell command to download and execute the file from the Internet.

According to foreign tech media outlet BleepingComputer, a malicious attacker has used notes in OneNote to spread malicious files. The attackers send phishing emails and include documents such as DHL invoices, money transfer forms, shipping notices and documents, and mechanical drawings.

The attacker attaches malicious VBS files to OneNote notes. Once the user double-clicks on them, the files automatically download and install malware from a remote site. In order to hide them and make the OneNote document look as legitimate as possible, the attackers overlay a “double-click to view file” box on top of these files.

This means that clicking on the box will launch a malicious file, which will install malware onto the device. Although OneNote warns users that opening the attachment could damage their computer and data, many users may ignore the warning and click “OK”.

Malicious OneNote documents often install remote access Trojans that can steal sensitive information and cryptocurrency wallets. Attackers can even use the victim’s webcam to take screenshots and record videos.
