Microsoft introduced the sidebar search feature in Edge over a year ago, and over time it evolved into a list that could launch services such as Microsoft Outlook, and it became even better as Microsoft added the ability to resize the sidebar in Edge Canary.

Reddit user Leopeva64-2 has discovered that the new resizable sidebar is available in the latest Edge Canary update, but we were unable to reproduce the change in Edge Canary version 107.0.1417.0. So this could be a controlled A/B test and this Reddit user has posted some images explaining how it works.

Users are able to resize the sidebar without enabling the settings flag, meaning that if Microsoft has rolled out this feature for you, it is available by default. Implementing the resize sidebar width simply requires hovering the mouse pointer over the space that separates the page content from the sidebar pane. Upon doing so, the browser will give back a double arrow allowing the pane to be resized.

As users have pointed out, it has some limitations. For example, the Favorites, History, Downloads and Collections and Outlook panes cannot be resized. However, this is something that can be changed in the future and all other websites and applications that users add manually are resizable.

Recently, Google has started developing a similar sidebar feature for Chrome, but for now all it does is display search results. Of course, Google wants its sidebar to do much more than that in the future.

Microsoft introduced the sidebar feature to the Microsoft Edge browser this summer, allowing users to easily open many applications, including Office, without leaving the current page. In August this year, a stable version of Edge 104 was released with further enhancements to the sidebar, supporting Outlook, Office, games and more.

However, Outlook for the web does not display very well in the sidebar, as it only opens Outlook for the web in a full window in the sidebar, resulting in controls in the panel that needs to be swiped to be viewed, and it does not support multiple accounts. The following image shows how Outlook on the web currently appears on the Edge sidebar.

Now, Microsoft has polished the sidebar experience once again, with special optimizations for Outlook on the web that enhances content richness and readability. However, the new experience is currently limited to some Edge Canary users and does not support dark mode.
