Microsoft recently announced that a number of cloud services, including OneDrive and SharePoint, will scan password-protected Zip files uploaded or shared by users.

Cybercriminals have long used archived documents to distribute malware, Microsoft said. Previously, the scanning objects of Microsoft’s cloud service were limited to compressed files without passwords set, and malware spreaders can bypass the inspection of anti-virus engines by setting passwords.

Security researcher Andrew Brandt revealed on Monday that Microsoft began scanning password-protected Zip archives on SharePoint.

He deliberately compressed several malware samples into encrypted Zip files, and after uploading to Microsoft cloud services, the files will be marked for malware.

Note: For users who do not want Microsoft to scan encrypted files, you can try to use different compression formats such as 7-Zip, or use the AES-256 encryption algorithm, etc.

Microsoft’s Azure cloud service is under scrutiny by EU antitrust authorities, citing concerns that Microsoft is using its market power to squeeze out rivals.

It is reported that as part of an informal investigation, EU regulators questioned its competitors and customers about possible violations of Microsoft’s cloud services. EU antitrust authorities want to know whether Microsoft is using the confidential information to compete with cloud service providers in the market, said two people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Subsequently, Microsoft announced a new set of artificial intelligence solutions and improvements to provide better cloud services for nonprofit organizations. Microsoft said the new AI suite aims to change the way the nonprofit industry and fundraisers engage with donors, manage events and optimize operations.

TrendForce Tiburon Consulting’s latest report points out that the global economy continues to be weak, prompting the four major cloud service providers in North America to revise their server procurement volume in 2023, and the figures may continue to be revised downward, in order of magnitude from more to less Meta, Microsoft, Google, AWS (Amazon Cloud Technology).

TrendForce estimates that the server procurement volume of the four vendors will drop to 4.4% from the original estimate of 6.9% year-over-year growth, which will affect the annual growth rate of global server shipments in 2023 to 1.87%, further aggravating the imbalance between supply and demand of Server DRAM. Server DRAM prices are expected to fall by 20%-25% in the first quarter.

Meta: The year-on-year decline in server procurement volume in 2023 will expand to 3.0%, and the subsequent procurement volume may be revised downward again.

Microsoft: The year-over-year growth of server procurement in 2023 will be revised downward from 16.9% to 13.4%, so server procurement can still maintain double-digit growth.

Google: Year-over-year growth in server purchases has also tightened to 5.2%.

AWS: Year-over-year growth in AWS server purchases will converge to 6.2% in 2023.
