eMagin stated in a statement that Samsung Display will acquire all of eMagin’s issued common shares at a premium of 10% per share, approximately US$2.08, with a total transaction amount of approximately US$218 million. eMagin has been committed to the research and development of Micro OLED technology for many years and is the leader in the Micro OLED display industry in the United States. Its products are mainly used in high-resolution AR / VR devices, covering consumer, military, medical and industrial, etc.

Industry insiders pointed out that SDC acquired eMagin to strengthen the development of RGB OLEDoS technology. In the short term, Samsung Display will continue to use WOLED+CF technology, and in the long run, it will still aim to develop RGB OLEDoS, aiming at supplying displays to Apple MR devices. As a near-eye display device, MR equipment has extremely high requirements on the image quality and craftsmanship of the display screen. It was previously reported that industry sources said that the Oledos panel of Apple’s mixed reality device will be dominated by Sony in the next few years. It is expected that the Oledos of Apple’s first MR device released this year will be provided by Sony.

Apple’s rumored mixed reality headset will launch in early 2023, but a second-generation model with substantial upgrades is already in development for a 2024 launch, according to ETNews. Suppliers are reportedly preparing to launch mass production of Apple’s headset in the fourth quarter of this year in order to launch the product early next year, but initial production volumes are not expected to be large.

This Apple AR headset concept 2 concept rendering is based on information allegedly leaked by Ian Zerbo.

Consistent with previous reports, Apple’s headset is said to feature a micro OLED display from Sony and LG Display that has a thin and light design and high power efficiency, three 3D sensing modules from LG Innotek, and a low to the mid-spec camera from a Chinese supplier.

The headset will focus on entertainment and gaming, but will effectively serve as a tentative device to prepare the market for a better second-generation product, which reports say is already in development.

The second-generation Apple headset, reportedly slated for release in 2024, will feature a lighter design, include calling capabilities, and have a built-in ultra-high-definition camera from LG Innotek.

Apple allegedly plans to differentiate its augmented and virtual reality devices from others such as Meta, Sony and Google with better usability, content and portability.

Samsung is expected to release a competing device after observing Apple’s headset release and its impact on the market.
