Last month, Samsung was the first to hold a ceremony to deliver the first 3nm GAA chips. The South Korean electronics giant claims that the next-generation chip based on ring-gate transistor technology is expected to eventually reduce area by up to 35 percent and deliver a 30 percent performance boost and 50 percent power consumption reduction compared to the existing FinFET process. Meanwhile, TSMC, another global chip foundry giant, has also said it will start mass production of 3nm chips in the second half of 2022.

In a recent interview with the South China Morning Post, TSMC CEO CC Wei admitted that the company is facing delivery delays, driven by global expansion.

But TSMC will soon be producing ultra-advanced 3nm chips, even if it is slowed by supply chain disruptions and other factors, CC Wei said at an annual technology forum.

"At first, when we saw that automakers were suffering from a shortage of cores, we all wondered how the industry had not fully understood the importance of chips.

But then TSMC's own equipment suppliers also encountered delivery delays and informed them that they were similarly affected by component and chip shortages.

As it turns out, many industries around the world have failed to realize the importance of supply chain management over the past years -- even TSMC itself did not do a good job of it.

Having realized this, TSMC is working to ensure steady progress on its plans, which include bringing its 3D chip stacking technology (SOIC) into volume production during 2022."

Finally, if all goes well, Apple and Intel will be TSMC’s first chip foundry customers for its 3nm advanced process.

On the other hand, Samsung, the global memory chip giant and second-largest chip foundry giant said its 2nm process node is in the early stages of development and is expected to be in volume production by 2025.

According to China Taiwan Economic Daily, TSMC President Wei Zhejia appeared today at the 2022 TSMC Technology Forum and mentioned that TSMC has been thinking about 3 nanometers for a long time to maintain the FF architecture and will be mass-produced. As for 2 nanometers, you can also share with everyone here Guaranteed mass production in 2025 will be the most advanced technology.

It is reported that TSMC’s 2-nanometer technology is significantly more efficient than its 3-nanometer technology. At the same power consumption, the speed is increased by 10~15%, or at the same speed, the power consumption is reduced by 25~30%.

It is worth mentioning that JC Hsu, the global vice president and general manager of the wireless communication division of MediaTek, presented a cooperation briefing during the speech. Wei Zhejia noticed that “only a 2% increase in efficiency should be one less zero”, and he also humorously said ” Please use 3 nanometers”.

Wei Zhejia also said, “TSMC has the ability to design products, but will never design products by itself. You can trust us to produce products, and you can always succeed if you stay with TSMC forever. The success of TSMC comes from the success of its customers. He also emphasized, “This is different from competitors. Their customers will have their own products launched regardless of whether they are successful or not.”

There has been news recently that TSMC will abandon the N3 process and instead focus on developing the N3E process with better performance and lower cost. According to the information about future advanced processes announced by TSMC at the 2022 technical seminar, the N3 process will be mass-produced in 2022, followed by N3E, N3P, N3X, etc. Among them, N3E should be mass-produced next year, and now Wei Zhejia Announced that 3nm is about to be mass-produced, it should refer to the N3 process, which is also equivalent to refuting the rumor.

In the advanced process competition, Samsung and TSMC has been the leading two, and the two companies can be described as a moment, Samsung in the last 10 years by TSMC all kinds of suppression, until the end of June on the 3nm process Samsung finally moved back to a game, preempting the mass production of 3nm, and is the GAA transistor technology.

In contrast, TSMC’s 3nm process is still based on mature FinFET transistor technology, with volume production in September, and GAA transistors will not be used until 2024 on the 2nm process, which is indeed one time ahead of Samsung in terms of technological advancement.

However Samsung won the face, but the first 3nm process is still embarrassing – Samsung has few customers to use, and the only customer that can be identified is a Chinese miner chip maker PanSemi (Shanghai PanSemi Semiconductor Technology Co., Ltd.).

A few days ago the Korean media said that Samsung found a second 3nm customer, a phone chip maker, and even rumors of oversupply of capacity, however, this customer in the end who has not been clear.

TSMC side is the opposite, in addition to Apple will debut 3nm process, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, MediaTek, Broadcom and other traditional customers will almost also choose TSMC 3nm, Intel will also use TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing GPU module on the 15th generation Core, these customers are basically confirmed.

For Samsung, although the 3nm GAA process has achieved lead, and foundry prices compared to TSMC there are advantages, but the impact of past negative issues such as yield, capacity and energy efficiency has not been completely eliminated, TSMC is still a stable and reliable choice for semiconductor majors.

Digitimes reports that TSMC plans to begin mass production of 3nm chips later this year for its upcoming MacBook models and other products.

The report’s paid preview reads, “Back-end companies are optimistic about demand for the upcoming MacBook chip, which will be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process technology, with production set to begin later this year, according to industry sources.”

However, TSMC is unlikely to generate significant revenue from overall 3nm chip production until at least the first quarter of 2023.

That information is consistent with a report last week in Taiwan’s Business Times, which said TSMC will start producing 3nm chips for Apple by the end of 2022. The report said Apple’s first 3nm chip could be the M2 Pro chip for the Mac, adding that the A17 Bionic chip in next year’s iPhone 15 Pro model will also be a 3nm chip.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects the M2 Pro chip to be used in the next generation of 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, as well as in the high-end Mac mini that will replace the current Intel-based chip. It’s not entirely clear if this will include new MacBook Pro and Mac mini models, or if Apple will wait to release its first Mac with a 3nm chip in 2023.

Apple’s M1 series chips and M2 chips both use TSMC’s 5nm and improved processes, and the transition to 3nm chips will improve the performance and power efficiency of the Mac and iPhone.
