The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced today that the next generation Qi wireless charging standard will integrate Apple’s MagSafe magnetic charging function. Qi2 is a new unified wireless charging standard that builds on the MagSafe charging technology provided by Apple.

Qi2 will integrate the Magnetic Power Profile, which means that future wireless charging panels from manufacturers like Samsung and OPPO will use Apple’s MagSafe technology. The technology is now available in the iPhone 12 series and later models.

WPC says Qi2 introduces the Magnetic Power Profile to ensure that phones and other battery-powered mobile products dock perfectly with chargers to improve energy efficiency and speed up charging. qi2 will allow the use of new accessories that cannot be charged using existing flat surface-to-flat devices (flat surface-to-flat surface).

The Qi2 standard will debut later this year and will replace the existing Qi standard. The first Qi2-enabled smartphones and chargers are expected to be available during the Christmas shopping season in 2023.

The new M2 MacBook Air is officially out, and it brings a lot of changes and improvements—including a new design and the addition of MagSafe charging. However, the M1 MacBook Air is still the best choice for many people—and there’s even a way to bring MagSafe-style charging to it.

This year, MagSafe is back not only on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro but also on the new M2 MacBook Air. These are the most expensive and modern MacBooks Apple currently sells, while the more affordable M1 MacBook Air and M2 13-inch MacBook Pro still use USB-C exclusively for charging.

However, if you’re still using a MacBook model that uses USB-C ports exclusively for charging and connectivity there are still accessories available to add MagSafe-style charging to your Mac. In fact, these accessories work with any USB-C device, including the iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad Pro.

For example, iSkey, from a small accessory manufacturer, supports many of the latest USB-C standards. The dongle, which one can order for $24.99 (or $20.99 for Amazon Prime members), has a magnetic USB-C connector that fits inside the port of a MacBook. It supports USB-C Power Delivery for 100W charging and supports up to 10Gb/s data transfer and 4K video output.

The iSkey accessory can be used with any USB-C accessory and is available in silver and space gray so that it can be color-matched with a Mac or iPad Pro. The product is reported to have received 4.5 stars out of over 4,200 users.
