Apple today announced the results of the third quarter of fiscal year 2023 (the second quarter of this year), in the earnings call, the company’s chief executive officer Tim Cook in an interview with Reuters, said that Apple has been researching a variety of AI technologies over the years, including generative AI here.

Tim Cook has always previously avoided talking about generative AI technology, and previous comments have always zoomed in on larger AI and machine learning technologies.

Tim Cook said in today’s interview that it is looking for various entry points to integrate various AI technologies, including generative AI, into its products to further enrich users’ lives and work.

Tim Cook commented, “We’ve been working on various AI technologies, including generative AI, for the past few years. We will continue to invest and innovate and use these technologies to advance our products in a responsible way to help enrich people’s lives. We have a huge investment in this area, which can be seen in our R&D spending.”

Reuters also noted that Apple’s R&D spending grew to $22.61 billion in the third quarter of 2023 (currently about RMB 162.566 billion), an increase of $3.12 billion compared to the same period last year.

Google is bringing a new wave of upgrades to its translation service with machine learning (ML)-driven additions. This makes it easier for users to translate text that occurs in the real world, such as storefront signs, menus, documents, business cards, and other items. Even better, the new feature doesn’t simply overlay the translation on top of the original text but instead uses an AI-generated background to reconstruct pixels for a more natural-looking experience.

Cathy Edwards, vice president and general manager of Google Search, noted:

"In many cases, contextual combinations of words—such as background images—really give greater meaning to what the user sees.

At this point you definitely don't want the important background that might appear in the image to be obscured by the translated text."

To make things even smoother, Google is also using a machine learning technique known as “generative adversarial networks” (aka GAN models).

Powered by this technology, the “Magic Eraser” feature intelligently erases unwanted objects from photos taken with a Pixel smartphone.

But now, Google is applying it to the translation feature as well. By incorporating translations into complex background images, it provides users with a more natural and seamless experience.

In the screen rendered by the software, you can view the translation as the original text, rather than adding another layer of occlusion to the current image. Speaking of which, some people may have thought of the company’s intentional new AR glasses.

"Google says more than 1 billion people use the company's translation service every month, involving text and images in more than 100 languages.

Starting this year, Google also began evaluating its AR prototype devices in public spaces with a handful of employees and trusted testers."

Sadly, the company’s first foray into consumer smartglasses with Google Glass products turned out to be short-lived.

Lastly, Google didn’t share long-term plans for its translation feature, saying only that the feature will be available later this year.

Apple has hired former Lamborghini executive Luigi Borrelli to help design an electric car for the company, the company said on July 28. Borrelli worked at Lamborghini for nearly 20 years and was responsible for the development of the car’s chassis and power engineering, as well as the design of suspension components, wheels and tires, steering and braking systems, exhaust systems, fuel systems, and driver assistance technologies.

There have been rumors since 2014 that Apple is developing an electric car, with the project being led by Kevin Lynch, who is part of the Apple Watch team, and John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of machine learning, who is also one of the leaders.

Analysts believe Apple will mass produce electric cars by 2025. From past rumors, Apple’s car project is not going well, with leadership changes all the time, many technical challenges, and a possible delay in the car’s launch.

Google is actively improving Gmail’s search results to make it easier for users to find specific contacts. In a blog post today, Google explains the upcoming launch of “intent matching for contacts and email addresses,” as well as new “personalized recommendations.”

By intent matching, Google uses machine learning tools to help you find relevant content about your search, and Gmail will narrow the search results to help you find exactly what you’re looking for, such as a specified contact, an email, or a file.

For example, Google explains that it gives priority to showing matches between email addresses and first names before showing matches for last names. Google previously recommended matching by last name, but now matches by first name instead.

In addition, Google will also prioritize the content of people you are connected within the search results based on how often they interact with a particular friend. Now, when you search by someone’s name or email as a keyword, frequent contacts will be shown first. Although this is all a detailed improvement, it can help you find a certain contact, or a certain email faster and easier.
