Apple’s upcoming M3 MacBook Pro/Air and new iPad are ushering in the latest progress.

Although Apple has launched new MacBook models in October in previous years, Mark Gurman said that the latest indication is that Apple will not release new laptops and iPad Pro this month.

 Apple-M3-MacBook-Pro-and-Air

According to what he revealed in the latest issue of the “Power On” newsletter, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips have just entered the DVT verification stage, but are still some way away from mass production Walk.

Note: From the completion of prototype development to the official release, it is generally divided into four stages:

 EVT (Engineering Validation Test)

 DVT (Design Verification Test)

 PVT (Product Validation Test)

The final stage of mass production.

Mark Gurman believes that this development indicates that the M3 MacBook Pro/Air is expected to be released between early 2024 and spring 2024, which roughly coincides with the release of the current 14/16-inch MacBook Pro (January 2023).

He also mentioned that the 13-inch MacBook Air and 15-inch MacBook Air are slightly behind the Pro series and have just entered the EVT stage. He estimates that these models will be released in the spring or summer of 2024.

In addition, Mark Gurman also mentioned that Apple’s new iPad Pro with a new design, OLED display, faster chip and redesigned Magic Keyboard will not be available until next year.

According to a recent blog post by DigiTimes, Apple will launch MacBook products equipped with M3 chips in 2024.

There is currently controversy over the release date of MacBook products with M3 chips. Some sources believe Apple will release it this year, while others believe it will be postponed to 2024.

The research department of DigiTimes has estimated the global laptop market in the next five years from 2023 to 2028, believing that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) will be 3%. Laptop shipments will grow 4.7% next year, ending a 2-year streak of declines, driven by easing inflation and new product launches.

The part of it is as follows:

The share of Arm laptops will decline in 2023. This is because most of Apple’s Laptop product lines use Arm-based CPUs and Apple’s shipments have dropped significantly this year. The American brand manufacturer plans to switch to CPUs built on TSMC’s 3nm node in 2024 for performance upgrades.

Mark Gurman believes that Apple may directly announce the launch of new Mac products through a press release in October, rather than holding a grand launch event like the iPhone; while Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple is unlikely to release a MacBook Air/Pro equipped with an M3 chip this year model.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that Apple is already developing 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models equipped with M3 chips, which are expected to be released in 2024.

According to reports, the current 13-inch MacBook Air will be released in June 2022, while the 15-inch model will be available next week. Both models currently feature M2 chips built on TSMC’s 5nm process.

Regarding the M3 chip, it is reported that it will be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process to improve performance and energy efficiency. The M3 chip should have a similar CPU and GPU core count as the M2 chip, Mark Gurman said.

Additionally, Mark Gurman said new iMacs and 13-inch MacBook Pro models with M3-series chips are also in the works. He expects a new iMac to launch early next year, with a design similar to the M1 model introduced in 2020.

The 15-inch MacBook Air is now available for order and will be officially released on June 13, offering four appearances in midnight, starry sky, silver, and space gray, with a starting price of 10,499 CNY.

According to previous news, Apple is expected to hold the 2023 WWDC keynote on June 6, Beijing time, and at this WWDC keynote, Apple will release iOS 17, macOS 14, watchOS 10, tvOS 17 and the long-awaited AR / VR headset. The latest article from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple will also bring a 15-inch MacBook Air laptop to the WWDC keynote.

Gurman has previously said that Apple will introduce a new MacBook Air at WWDC, but this is the first time he has explicitly said that Apple will introduce a 15-inch MacBook Air.

The 15-inch MacBook Air is expected to be upgraded only in terms of screen size, while the rest of the configuration will most likely be the same as the previously released 13-inch MacBook Air.

According to Apple’s website, the 13-inch MacBook Air features a new slim design, four elegant looks, a wider 13.6-inch Liquid retina display, a 1080p HD camera, MagSafe charging support and more powerful features. Its M2 chip with a more powerful 8-core CPU and up to 10-core graphics helps users do more faster. 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth and support for up to 24GB of high-speed unified memory allow the new MacBook Air to handle larger, more complex workflows with ease.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at Tianfeng International, has said that the new MacBook Air will come with two M2 chip options that have a different number of cores than the existing 13-inch model. In addition, he predicted that the new 15-inch MacBook would be equipped with either the M2 or M2 Pro chips. The new model will be clearly labeled as the 15-inch MacBook “MacBook Air,” not a new product line, and shipments of the device are expected to reach 5-6 million units in 2023.

In the latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple is working internally on the M3 chip for the MacBook Air and iMac. The chip will be made using a more efficient 3nm process.

Apple MacBook Air

Gurman says it’s unclear when Apple will choose to launch the new MacBook Air and iMac, but Gurman predicts the M3 chip will be available later this year or early next year.

Gurman first mentioned the M3 chip in June last year. He noted at the time that Apple was working internally on the M3 chip for the 13″ / 15″ MacBook Air and the new iMac. Gurman said at the time that the M3 chip would be available this year, but he has now revised the chip’s launch date.

Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup, announced earlier this month, includes the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips and also adds the M2 Pro chip to the Mac Mini. These chips are based on the second-generation 5nm process, which is still an updated version of the standard 5nm process Apple uses to make its M1 chips.

The 3nm process can increase speed by up to 15 percent and reduce power consumption by 30 percent compared to the 5nm process. TSMC began mass production of 3nm chips last year, but the technology won’t reach the manufacturer’s new factory in Arizona until 2026.

The butterfly keyboard class action lawsuit is finally settling after a long drawn-out period. Citing foreign technology media Law360 reported that Apple plans to pay a $50 million settlement, and the motion has received preliminary approval from a federal judge in California.

Of the $50 million settlement, $13.6 million goes to pay attorneys’ fees, $2 million to pay litigation costs and $1.4 million for users to pay settlement administration fees, leaving the rest to be distributed to the members involved in the class action.

The keystrokes, which date back as far as 2018, cover customers in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Washington who complained that Apple was well aware of problems with the keyboard mechanism used on MacBook Pro machines between 2015 and 2019. The lawsuit alleges that Apple concealed the defect from consumers in order to continue selling the devices.

Apple introduced the butterfly keyboard on MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro devices in 2015 and 2016, claiming that the keyboard provided superior key feel and stability while also allowing for a thinner design. Soon after the Butterfly keyboards were introduced, customers discovered that they were prone to failure.

Thousands of users have experienced repeated key presses and problems with dust and other particles getting into the butterfly mechanism and causing the keys to fail. These complaints led to a huge controversy over the butterfly technology, and Apple eventually launched a keyboard repair program in June 2018.

The repair program only covered MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air models for four years, and Apple just replaced the Butterfly keyboard with another one, so some customers had repeat failures that ended up being no longer covered. For this reason, Apple’s repair program is inadequate, the lawsuit says.

Apple tried to iterate on the butterfly mechanism to make it more durable, but it went through three generations without solving the problem. Apple had to replace the butterfly keyboards with more reliable scissor-switch keyboards, with the company phasing out the last of them in 2020. All Macs now use the scissor switch mechanism and don’t suffer from the same problem.

Earlier this week, Apple announced a self-service repair service for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops equipped with M1 Series chips, allowing users to access repair manuals and original parts and tools through Apple’s self-service repair store.

However, repair guide site iFixit isn’t happy with Apple’s approach. In a blog post, iFixit’s Sam Goldheart said Apple’s plan manages to make the MacBook Pro look “harder to fix,” mainly because Apple’s current MacBook Pro battery replacement is very expensive and time-consuming.

iFixit says that Apple does not allow users to purchase a separate battery for their MacBook Pro, but must order a part called a “Top Case. Users must then follow Apple’s repair manual to replace the entire “Top Case” part for the MacBook Pro pictured below.

The “Top Case” parts include keyboard, battery, speakers, etc. The 14-inch MacBook Pro version costs $527 (about 3604.68 yuan), which is about $200 (about 1368 yuan) more expensive than having Apple’s official/authorized stores replace the battery.

IT Home has learned that Apple’s repair manual is 162 pages long, and if users don’t have the right tools, they will have to spend $49 (about $335.16) to rent a repair tool kit, which is far more expensive in terms of time and money than an official/authorized Apple store repair.

However, the initial N3 process is mainly for early customers with super investment ability and pursuit of new processes, such as Apple, but the limitations are also very strong, such as the late timing, the application is not wide enough.

However, after 3nm, TSMC will launch an upgraded version of N3E process next year, that is, 3nm Enhanced, to further improve performance, reduce power consumption, and expand the scope of applications, compared to N5 with the same performance and density of power consumption by 34%, the same power and density of performance by 18%, or can increase the transistor density by 60%.

The analysts at the Business Times believe that the N3E process will become the mainstay of production discussions among major manufacturers, including Apple’s iPhone 15 series A17 processor, the next generation of M3 processors, and AMD’s future Zen5, among others.

M3 is said to be used in products such as the MacBook Air, and Apple is likely to increase the display size of this model to improve cooling through stronger cooling solutions. Other potential products include a newer iPad Pro line, as well as a newer iMac, and possibly a future iPad Air. M3 will likely use 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores again, just like M2 and M1.

As a matter of industry practice, TSMC will test the performance and trial yields of the N3E process first this year, with mass production expected in the second half of 2023. Corelist+ has leaked an internal TSMC PPT showing that its N3E process is progressing very well, at least in terms of yield.

The PPT shows that TSMC’s next-generation N3E process yields exceeded expectations, with the average yield of N3E’s 256Mb SRAM at about 80%, mobile devices and HPC chips at about 80%, and ring oscillator yields even exceeding 92%.

Last week, the new MacBook Air with the upgraded M2 processor went on sale, and the first batch of pre-order users arrived to unbox it. Although the M2 performance is good, users found that due to the fanless design of MBA, the M2 will soon trigger the power consumption wall, and the performance is much worse than the new MBP with the same M2. Not only that, the 256GB version of the MBA is designed with a single SSD, and there is a speed reduction.

However, after just one week of use, some users found a new problem, that is, the midnight-colored version of the body paint is very serious, just a few days, the edge of the touch panel, Thunderbolt interface and other locations have been a big flower face.

It seems that this time the midnight color version of the coating is very unstable, while also easy to leave fingerprints.

Unfortunately, Apple has not given a response, at least this reminds consumers who are interested in getting their hands on the phone, if you care, please avoid the midnight color style.
