There have been rumors that the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models will come with Always-On Display, and in the latest Xcode 14 Beta release, there are once again traces of Always-On Display. According to information shared by Steve Moser, Xcode 14 Beta already offers a unique lock screen interface: the on-screen widget cancels details when the screen wakes up.

The animated demo suggests that iPhone 14 Pro models may remove details and other lock screen content from the widget after the hibernation screen is activated. iOS developer @rhogelleim also suggests that a black and white version of the widget is being developed in Xcode 14 Beta, most likely in preparation for the upcoming hibernation screen.

Previously it was said that the constant display feature was limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models and required the necessary screen technology to make it possible. Sources say the two Pro models have a screen refresh rate that can be switched between 1-120Hz, a more significant improvement over the 10-120Hz of the iPhone 13 Pro series.

The 1Hz refresh rate means that the time, widgets, and notifications are visible when the iPhone is asleep. iPhone 14 Pro Series will also feature a new bangs-free design with a punch and pill “exclamation point” design.

Along with the fourth beta release of iOS 16/iPadOS 16 to developers, Apple also pushed out the ActivityKit Beta, which means everyone will soon be able to enjoy building more Live Activity real-time activity widgets for the iOS 16 lock screen interface. At the WWDC Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple demonstrated this novel interactive status notification designed to make it easier for users to keep an eye on live content through the lock screen interface.

According to Apple officials, Live Activity is not exactly the same as a widget as a UI extension to an application – after all, the two use different mechanisms to receive updates.

For example, users can use Live Activity to stay on top of sports events and easily view updated scores on the lock screen. And if you’re waiting for an Uber ride, the widget can also show you how close the driver is.

And for developers, they can configure, start, update and terminate Live Activity features through ActivityKit.

On the iOS 16 / iPadOS preview page, Apple does not list Live Activity as the first available. Even so, the Cupertino tech giant is allowing developers to get a sneak peek at its app.

If all goes well, Live Activity will officially arrive with the major iOS 16 update this fall. But in the meantime, developers can’t officially submit Live Activity-enabled apps to Apple.
