Linux Kernel 6.2 end of life cycle, developers urge users to upgrade to Linux Kernel 6.3. Linux 6.3 is already the default kernel in Arch Linux and openSUSE Tumbleweed, and it will soon be available in Fedora Linux.

The kernel.org website has marked the Linux kernel 6.2 series as EOL (end of life), which means it will no longer support bug and security fixes.

In February 2023, Linux kernel 6.2 introduced new features, including Protected Load Balancing (PLB) for the IPv6 stack, a new FineIBT control flow integrity mechanism for x86, support for Intel’s “asynchronous exit notification” mechanism, and more Rust infrastructure.

As a short-lived kernel branch, Linux 6.2 is now end-of-life (EOL), and kernel developer and maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman today released Linux 6.2.16 and urged users to upgrade to the latest Linux 6.3 kernel family as soon as possible.

As a result, GNU/Linux distributions that use the Linux 6.2 kernel family are expected to upgrade to the latest Linux 6.3 kernel family soon. Most rolling distributions, such as Arch Linux or openSUSE Tumbleweed, and some of their derivatives, are already using the Linux kernel 6.3 family.

Linux kernel 6.3 was released in April 2023, and new features include a new Intel VPU DRM acceleration driver, BIG TCP support for IPv4, Rust code support for x86_64 user-mode Linux, “ZBB” bit manipulation extension support for the RISC-V kernel, and native Steam. bit manipulation extensions for the RISC-V kernel and native Steam Deck controller support.

Note that Linux kernel 6.3 is also not in the LTS (Note: Long Term Support) series and is expected to end its life cycle at the end of July, when it will be urged to upgrade to the new Linux 6.4 series — expected to be available in late June or early July 2023.

Canonical has released Ubuntu 23.04 Beta today, and the stable version is expected to be released on April 20.

Ubuntu 23.04 Beta desktop environment has been upgraded to the recently released GNOME 44 with an optimized Ubuntu Font, and the kernel has been upgraded to the Linux 6.2 branch, which supports most major hardware.

Ubuntu Desktop also introduces a new installer written using Google’s Flutter UI SDK, which implements most of the features of the previous Ubuntu installer, except that it does not support ZFS installations.

If users want to install Ubuntu 23.04 with ZFS, Canonical also provides an official ISO image with the old installer, Ubuntu 23.4 has also released two additional ISO images, Ubuntu Unity and Ubuntu Cinnamon.

EndeavourOS developer Bryan Poerwo today announced the official availability of EndeavourOS Cassini Nova, a new ISO release of the popular rolling distribution based on Arch Linux that brings updated components and bug fixes.

EndeavourOS Cassini Nova appeared less than a month after the release of EndeavourOS Cassini Neo, which upgraded the kernel package to the latest Linux 6.2 series. (The ISO image comes with Linux kernel 6.2.2)

Other updated components in the EndeavourOS Cassini Nova release include Mesa 22.3.6 graphics stack, Xorg Server 21.1.7 display server, NVIDIA 525.89.02 graphics driver, Calamares 3.3.0 Alpha 3 graphics installer, and Mozilla Firefox 110.0.1 web browser.

This release also fixes some issues reported by users since the release of EndeavourOS Cassini Neo, such as adding the nvidia_drm.modeset=1 kernel parameter when installing NVIDIA Prime, and no longer installing only the required packages when installing offline.

In addition, this release no longer includes the xf86-video-intel package for Intel legacy CPUs by default and cleans up the installer configuration file and Calamares network install list to prevent users from accidentally installing corrupted visual tools when they are not selected.

“These fixes are specific to the ISO and its installation process, and users running the system don’t have to search for “Nova updates”, they just perform regular updates since EndeavourOS is a rolling release,” said EndeavourOS developer Bryan Poerwo said.

If users wish to deploy EndeavourOS on a new computer or reinstall for some reason, it is recommended that they download EndeavourOS Cassini Nova from the official website.

Arch Linux March 2023 (2023.03.01) ISO image has been made available for download, using the latest Linux 6.2 kernel, Arch install 2.5.3 text mode installer can perform a new Arch Linux installation. By default, the ISO comes with the Linux kernel 6.2.1.

Arch Linux version 2023.03.01 also includes the latest Arch Install 2.5.3 text-mode installer, which brings improved disk encryption menus, including HSM, improved partition reliability, new data classes for individual devices (DiskEncryption and Fido2 and Fido2Device), the ability to obtain information about block devices, and new translations into Ukrainian, Korean and Chinese (PRC).

arch install 2.5.3 also fixes a number of bugs, including an issue where you had to wait for arch Linux-keyring to be populated by other services before installing, and a bug where the installer could not read the “/dev/ sdaX” disk using lsblk. However, a recent fix slows down disk selection and manipulation in this release. The developer will be working on a fix.

Users can download the Arch Linux 2023.03.01 ISO image version from the official website, which can be written to a CD or USB flash drive.

Other users running Arch Linux can get the latest installation by simply running the sudo pacman -Syu command in a terminal emulator. arch Linux 2023.03.01 ISO image version is only available for new installations.
