Red Hat manager Matthias Clasen has posted an article on the “LibreOffice Packages” mailing list about plans to reduce support for LibreOffice.

The article as follows:

The Red Hat Display Systems team (the team behind the Red Hat desktop environment) has been responsible for maintaining the LibreOffice installer in Fedora for the past several years as it has advanced the LibreOffice process in Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions.

We are currently reprioritizing the engineering of RHEL for Workstation to focus on Wayland, building HDR support, and the features that Workstation users need.

This work will improve the workstation experience for both Fedora and RHEL users, and we hope that the entire Linux community will embrace it positively.

On balance, we have decided to reduce our work on desktop applications and not integrate LibreOffice in future versions of RHEL, which means less maintenance of LibreOffice in future versions of Fedora.

We will continue to maintain LibreOffice in currently supported RHEL (RHEL 7, 8, and 9) and continue to fix CVE security vulnerabilities and provide related content throughout its lifecycle.

The engineers working on this will provide some fixes upstream to ensure that LibreOffice works in Flatpak format.

Any member of the community is free to take over the maintenance of either RPM (Red Hat Package Managers) in Fedora or Fedora LibreOffice Flatpak.

The Document Foundation released LibreOffice 7.5.3 today, the third maintenance update to the latest LibreOffice 7.5 series of open source and free office suites.

LibreOffice 7.5.3 was released about five weeks after LibreOffice 7.5.2, bringing with it another batch of bug fixes.

In terms of numbers, LibreOffice 7.5.3 has resolved a total of 119 bugs reported by users or found by LibreOffice developers. You can check the RC1 and RC2 logs for details.

LibreOffice 7.5.3 is available for download as a binary installer for DEB or RPM-based GNU/Linux distributions from the official website.

All users running the LibreOffice 7.5 office suite series will be urged to install the update to the latest version, with 7.5.3 also arriving in the GNU/Linux distribution stable software repositories soon.

LibreOffice 7.5, a major update to the open source office suite, released in early February 2023, bringing many new features and enhancements, including major improvements to dark mode support, new application and MIME type icons, an enhanced single toolbar UI, improved PDF export etc.

It will be supported with a total of seven maintenance updates until November 30, 2023. The next release, LibreOffice 7.5.4, is expected to be released in early June.

The Document Foundation reminds again that this is a “community” version of its LibreOffice office suite, maintained by volunteers and members of the open source community. For enterprise deployments, they recommend the LibreOffice Enterprise family of applications from ecosystem partners.

The Document Foundation today released LibreOffice 7.4.5, a patch update to the stable LibreOffice 7.4 open-source office suite series, to address critical issues affecting many users across all supported platforms.

LibreOffice 7.4.5 comes two weeks after the release of LibreOffice 7.4.4 and fixes a crash that occurs when clicking the header or footer button after scrolling in the LibreOffice Writer component. The issue was discovered in LibreOffice version 7.4.4 and affected a large number of users.

The Foundation recommends that all users of the LibreOffice 7.4 Office Suite family update their installations to LibreOffice version 7.4.5 as soon as possible. Users can do so by downloading binaries for RPM- or DEB-based distributions from the official website or via the distribution’s stable software repository.

This update was initially planned for early March 2023, as the Foundation is currently focused on finalizing the next major release of the open source office suite LibreOffice 7.5, which is expected to bring numerous new features and improvements next week on February 2.

As a result, the LibreOffice 7.4 series will receive additional minor releases until LibreOffice 7.4.7. The March update has now been assigned to LibreOffice 7.4.6, which is expected to be released in the first week of March with more bug fixes.

The LibreOffice 7.4 Office Suite series will be supported until June 12, 2023, as LibreOffice 7.5 will be considered a feature release for enthusiasts and cutting-edge users.

This is the “community” version of LibreOffice, supported by volunteers and other members of the open source community. For enterprise deployments and paid technical support, users will need to use the LibreOffice Enterprise family of applications.

The Document Foundation recently added support for the free office software LibreOffice on the RISC-V 64-bit platform, which finally has an available office suite.

This support was merged this Thursday, and gbuild has been properly updated for RISC-V with the addition of the UNO Bridge for RISC-V 64-bit.

In August this year, Ali Pingtou released a high-performance swordless 600 RISC-V chip design platform, and launched a prototype chip Trailing Shadow 1520, with Dragon Lizard OS, Ali Pingtou ran LibreOffice for the first time on the Trailing Shadow 1520 chip.

This official update to LibreOffice will bring more RISC-V platforms up and running and will help RISC-V achieve high-performance applications sooner rather than later.
