At a seminar held in Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday, Choong Hoon Yi, CEO of analyst firm UBI Research, said LG Display will supply 8th-generation OLED panels in 2026, still winning Apple’s panel orders.

Yi said Samsung Display is currently the only display panel maker that has invested in 8th-generation OLED production; LG Display and BOE have yet to follow suit.

Yi said that the main reason for LG Display is that the existing LCD production line has encountered obstacles in switching to OLED production lines, which has delayed the launch of the 8th generation OLED.

It was previously reported that Samsung Display said in April this year that it is expected to start mass production of the 8th-generation OLED panels in 2-3 years, and it is estimated that it will not be until 2025 at the latest.

December 8, according to foreign media reports, LG Group’s LCD panel maker LG Display is expected to launch large OLED panels with microlens array technology in 2024.

LG Display is one of the world’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels, OLED and flexible displays, and dominates the global market for large OLED TV screens, producing displays for a range of companies, including some models of Apple’s iPhone.

At the SID 2022 event in May, the company debuted a 77-inch OLED panel with microlens array technology.

However, large OLED panels with microlens array technology are expected to debut in TVs in 2024, as LG Electronics and Sony, two of Lakin Display’s OLED panel customers, do not plan to use the technology in their 2023 TV products.

In August, foreign media reported that Lakin Display plans to launch a 20-inch OLED panel for personal devices by the end of this year. In addition, the company is also working to obtain a bendable OLED technology.

According to foreign media reports, in terms of better display OLED panels, Samsung Display and LG Display, the two Korean manufacturers have obvious advantages, including Samsung Display in smartphones and other small and medium-sized OLED panels used to have the advantage, LG Display’s advantage is in the TV and other large OLED panels required.

Reports in the Korean media indicate that LG Display, which has a clear advantage in large OLED panels, has set a target for next year, as they plan to produce 9.2 million large OLED panels.

According to reports in the Korean media, of the large OLED panels LG Display plans to produce next year, 5.4 million will be produced at its Guangzhou plant and the remaining 3.8 million at its Paju plant in South Korea.

If LG Display’s plan to produce 9.2 million large OLED panels next year is true, it would mean that production would continue to increase year-on-year, up 1.4 million from this year’s planned shipment target of 7.8 million.

It’s worth noting that the Korean media report also mentions that LG Display’s apparent plan to produce 9.2 million large OLED panels does not include the portion that may be supplied to Samsung.

Previously there was news that Samsung’s OLED TVs, planned to use quantum dot OLED panels produced by Samsung Display, but due to limited production capacity, they may purchase large OLED panels from LG Display, the two companies have also conducted negotiations, LG Display hopes to supply 2 million to Samsung this year, but the two sides of the negotiations in May this year has stopped, LG Display this year 7.8 million large size LG Display’s target of shipping 7.8 million large OLED panels this year may also be difficult to achieve.
