The first Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 Lenovo ThinkPad X13s has been listed overseas, and the China version will also hit shelves in the near future, priced at 7,999 yuan.

Now PCMAG has released the CPU performance test of this notebook.

In Cinebench R23, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 multicore scores 2676 points, which is less than the Acer TravelMate P6’s i7-1165G7, less than half of the Gateway 14’s i5-1235U, and far less than the XPS 13 Plus’ i7-1280P.

In Geekbench, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 multi-core score of 5845 outpaces the i7-1165G7 and i5-1235U and is about 59% of the i7-1280P.

In terms of core performance, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 scores 916 in the 3DMark TimeSpy DX12 test, which is less than the 96EU cores of the 11th and 12th generation Cores.

In terms of battery life, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 shows the advantages of the Arm processor, with the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s playing 720p video at 50% brightness for 18 hours and 23 minutes, compared to 11 hours and 19 minutes for the i5-1235U-powered Gateway 14 notebook and over 8 hours and 6 minutes for the i7-1280P-powered XPS 13 Plus.

Snapdragon 8cx Gen3 was released at the end of last year, using a 5nm process. Qualcomm’s website does not give detailed specifications, except that its CPU multitasking performance is improved by up to 85%, GPU performance is improved by up to 60%, and it can support up to 25 hours of battery life on a single charge.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X13s comes with a 13.3-inch 16:10 LED-backlit touchscreen display with WUXGA (1920×1200) resolution, 100% sRGB color gamut, 300nit brightness, a magnesium body, weighing only 1.06kg and 13.4mm thick; running Windows 11 ARM, with pre-installed Office, 16GB dual-channel RAM and 512GB SSD, fanless design, WiFi 6E support, built-in SIM card, 5G network support and 12 months of traffic by default. It runs Windows 11 ARM, with pre-installed Office, 16GB dual-channel memory and 512GB SSD, fanless design, Wi-Fi 6E support, built-in SIM card, 5G network support, and 12 months of traffic by default.

At the recent DebConf22 conference in Kosovo, Mark Pearson, who is responsible for Lenovo’s Linux-related initiatives, gave a personal perspective on the upgrades the company has received over the past few years and the progress of its platform support for Linux in 2022.

In his presentation, Pearson also shared some of Lenovo’s achievements in advancing Linux, saying that by 2022 it is estimated that more than 30 notebook and desktop platforms will support Linux, including the L, E and Z series. These new platforms include Intel Alder Lake S/P/H, AMD Rembrandt, and several AMD Barcelo models. Lenovo is starting to offer Debian on these devices in addition to Ubuntu and Fedora as part of its Linux pre-installation.

Lenovo’s Linux engineers have faced several challenges over the past year, including panel refresh issues, WiFi changes, Intel network driver issues, AMD power consumption issues, NVIDIA driver issues for energy certification, and supply chain shortages. The good news, however, is the increased support and compatibility with Linux through closer relationships with OEM hardware suppliers.

The recent issue surrounding the new Lenovo systems is the inability to boot to Linux by default due to the disabling of third-party UEFI CA certification. It is mandated by Microsoft, but Lenovo allows it to be easily changed from the system BIOS.

During the presentation, Pearson also mentioned the introduction of Linux support for the Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC-equipped ThinkPad X13s. Linux Kernel 5.20 will Mainline Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 and support the ThinkPad X13s Arm version.
