Intel Corp. is building what it says is “the largest silicon chip manufacturing site on the planet” in Ohio, requiring 7,000 workers. However, the labor shortage affecting the construction industry may make it difficult to recruit the workers it needs. At the same time, industry competition for workers could slow down the pace of housing construction in the area, which is exactly the kind of support Intel’s factories need to attract a growing workforce.

It should be noted that Intel’s factory construction project will not require all 7,000 workers to be immediately available, and that number is likely to be only a fraction of the workers needed to build the complex around Intel’s factory. The construction of Intel’s chip factories is expected to accelerate because President Joe Biden has signed the Chip and Science Act, which provides $52 billion in funding for semiconductor companies such as Intel. Intel Ohio factory initial investment of $ 20 billion, the final investment will be as much as $ 100 billion.

Given the state of the construction industry, Intel’s factory project could face some setbacks. Earlier this year, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), which represents non-unionized construction workers, said the industry would need to attract 650,000 workers to meet labor demand.
