On 23 October – Indian telecoms giant Jio launched its first laptop in India, the JioBook, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor, with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of eMMC storage, and expandable up to 128GB via microSD card.

It is currently available on Reliance Digital for just Rs. 15,799 (approximately RMB 1384). This is the second low-cost device from Reliance Jio after the JioPhone, a laptop they intend to use as a tablet replacement for company employees who are not in the office.

The laptop is not running on the usual Windows or ChromeOS, but on JioOS, an Android-based system that has been “optimized for superior performance” and native language support.

Other than that, the laptop features an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 TN screen, a built-in Jio SIM card, 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 support, a 5000mAh battery with a battery life of around 8 hours, a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI and USB-A 2.0 ports, a 2MP camera and stereo speakers.

The JioBook also comes bundled with several Jio apps and Microsoft 365 services, and the notebook was developed over a period of at least 2 years. The company quietly showcased it at the Mobile India Conference trade show last month.

Earlier this month it was also announced that Reliance Jio was planning to launch a 5G version of its popular phone, the JioPhone, codenamed “Ganga” (Ganges).

According to multiple reports, the JioPhone 5G will come with a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, and it is likely to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chip and offer up to 38GB of storage space.

The laptop is made in India and is priced at INR 15,799, or $190, with discounts of up to $60 at certain banks and credit card partners. The company quietly showcased it at the Mobile India Conference trade show last month.

As you might expect, the JioBook’s specs aren’t very high-end. It features an 11.6-inch HD display with a screen resolution of 1366 x 768. It’s powered by a 64-bit, 2GHz octa-core processor from Qualcomm and 2GB of RAM. But the laptop comes with an embedded Jio sim card that supports Jio 4G LTE connectivity right out of the box. The company says on its shop page that the JioBook has up to 128GB of flash memory and can be used for up to 8 hours on a single charge.
