“Blue Origin”, the commercial space company owned by billionaire Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, announced the design of the “Blue Moon” lunar lander. Designed and presented the lander model to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson at the engine production plant in Alabama, USA.

According to reports, what is on display this time is the “Blue Moon” Mark 1, a single-launch lunar cargo lander that can transport up to 3 tons of cargo anywhere on the lunar surface, and can stay on the lunar surface, providing “Safe, reliable and affordable” access to the lunar environment.

Blue Origin said that “Blue Moon” will be ready to fly to the moon in the next three years and is expected to launch a manned lunar mission by the end of this decade. The lander for this mission will be the “Blue Moon” Mark 2 type.

It was previously reported that on May 20 this year, NASA announced that Blue Origin had won a US$3.4 billion contract from the agency, which will build an on-duty lunar lander.

Blue Origin said it plans to build a lander about 16 meters tall in partnership with Lockheed Martin, Boeing, spacecraft software company Draper and robotics company Astrobotic.

Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin, U.S. military company Boeing and Lockheed Martin announced yesterday that they will team up to pitch a lunar lander to NASA. Previously, Jeff Bezos had lost out to Elon Musk in a bid for the lunar lander contract.

Musk and Bezos are space rivals

The proposal to jointly develop a lunar lander, led by Blue Origin, is the second attempt by the companies to win the coveted lunar lander contract. NASA, which is currently looking for more options for a lunar landing under its multibillion-dollar Artemis program, set a deadline yesterday for the proposal, and the agency expects to announce the winner in June 2023.

Last year, NASA chose Elon Musk’s SpaceX to carry out the first few Artemis missions to the moon over the next 10 years, rejecting a bid from a team led by Blue Origin largely because of funding constraints. Later, NASA put out another bid for a second lunar lander option as a backup to the SpaceX lunar lander.

In a brief statement posted on its website yesterday, Blue Origin disclosed that its team had submitted a bid to NASA for a second lunar lander project, saying that “in partnership with NASA, the team will achieve a sustained presence on the Moon. Blue Origin’s team also includes spacecraft software company Draper, space robotics company Astrobotic, and Honeybee Robotics, a manufacturer of military and civilian robotic systems that has been acquired by Blue Origin.

The US tech billionaires just had their best day ever. Their wealth increased by $59 billion (about 424 billion yuan), a record one-day increase, as the stock market rallied on Thursday.

▲ Bezos’ wealth soared by $10.5 billion

In Thursday’s U.S. stock market, the S&P 500 rose 5.5% and the Nasdaq 100 rose 7.5%. That stemmed from U.S. data showing that inflation fell more than expected in October, sparking bets that the Federal Reserve may stop raising interest rates sharply. Technology stocks, which have been battered this year, have led the stock market higher.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos emerged as the biggest winner, increasing his net worth by $10.5 billion to $119.6 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Amazon’s stock soared 12%, its biggest gain since February, after reports that his successor, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, was looking for ways to cut costs.

Musk’s wealth increment came in second. His net worth rose by $9.6 billion on Thursday to $183.8 billion and remains the world’s richest man. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s net worth increased by $5.9 billion. The fortunes of Google’s two founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, rose by $5.3 billion and $5.1 billion, respectively.
