Piper Sandler recently released its semi-annual U.S. youth survey report, and the data showed that Apple’s iPhone is still the most popular among teenagers.

iPhone
A survey of 6,020 teenagers in 47 states in the United States showed that 85% own at least one iPhone and 86% plan to buy an iPhone as their next smartphone.

▲ On the left is iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, on the right is iPhone 15/Plus

While the iPhone remains the most popular smartphone among teens, its ownership rate is down from the October 2023 survey, when 87% of teens owned an iPhone and 88% planned to buy one.

The agency stated:

iPhone ownership of 85% and iPhone purchase intention of 86% are both close to all-time highs, though below 2021’s all-time highs.

We believe it is important to increase penetration and purchase intention given the maturity of the high-end smartphone market. Additionally, there are encouraging trends in premium phones as Apple continues to launch new iPhones, proving the overall stickiness of the product portfolio.

Finally, as the number of Apple hardware installations continues to grow, the service industry will also show a positive development trend.

Apple Watch
As for the Apple Watch, 34% of teens reported using it, unchanged from last fall. However, intentions to purchase an Apple Watch rose 3%, with 13% of teens planning to purchase an Apple Watch in the next six months.

Apple Music
Teens prefer Spotify as their music service, with nearly two-thirds of teens surveyed saying Spotify is their service of choice. Just over 30% of teens say they use Apple Music.

Apple TV+
Apple TV+ is not popular among teen audiences, with less than 5% of teens saying they watch Apple TV+ every day. By comparison, more than 30% of teens regularly watch Netflix and nearly 30% watch YouTube.

During its September earnings call, iPhone reported a record quarter. Despite growing sales, the average selling price of iPhones in the U.S. is declining. This isn’t the first time the iPhone has seen its average selling price drop, to be precise, it’s the second quarter in a row, amounting to the company’s worst performance so far in 2021.

CIRP shared data on its Substack titled “iPhone sales mix continues to drive average retail prices down.” In addition to the average selling price, the research firm also noted the weighted average retail price of iPhones in the United States. However, the full scope of the study does not include wholesale discounts given by Apple to retailers. However, the metric reveals the different iPhone models and storage capacities that end users are considering.

According to research, data from CIRP showed that the weighted average retail price of iPhones in the United States peaked at $988 in the March 2023 quarter. Since then, the weighted average price has declined for two consecutive quarters. Prices dropped $40 in June and another $30 in September. iPhone performance was relatively low compared to the previous year.

Currently, the average iPhone retail price in the U.S. is $918, matching iPhone performance in 2021-2022. The change in average price is due to older iPhone models. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are selling like hotcakes, as are the iPhone 14 Pro models. However, the iPhone 14 Pro models don’t perform as well as their predecessors, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max.

The main change this quarter was in sales of year-old flagship phones that are being retired as their successors become available. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models accounted for 23% of total sales, down from 37% for the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models in the same period last year.

While iPhone average selling prices have been low over the past two quarters, it remains to be seen how the iPhone 15 series performs during the holiday season. This could significantly boost sales of this product range, deriving a new balance in average selling prices. However, these are just speculations at this stage, and device sales are likely to decline further in the next quarter.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri accepted the investment Interviews with reporters and analysts pointed out that supply constraints still exist for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models one month after they went on sale.

Apple’s official website in China and pre-ordered iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max today (November 3). You can choose colors such as raw titanium and the delivery date is November 18-25.

The overseas distribution situation is even more serious. Most iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max configurations have been out of stock for several weeks and cannot be picked up from Apple Stores.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, iPhone 15 models are selling better than iPhone 14 models, but the supply of iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max is limited, which affects Apple’s total iPhone revenue.

“We are confident that we will reach a balance between supply and demand later this quarter,” Cook said of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple held a very short special event today to launch a new generation of MacBook Pro and iMac equipped with M3 series chips.

The 30-minute presentation looked similar to any pre-recorded launch event, but there was one detail — it was shot with an iPhone 15 Pro Max phone.

It is found that at the end of the demonstration, after Apple CEO Tim Cook thanked the audience, a message appeared on the screen: “This event was shot on an iPhone and edited on a Mac.” There was also a disclaimer that said , “all presenters, locations and drone footage” were shot using an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

This is not the first time that Apple has demonstrated the imaging capabilities of the iPhone. It has previously launched annual short films shot with iPhone for many years.

According to reports from many foreign technology media such as iMore and BGR, users discovered a very serious screen burn-in problem after using the iPhone 15 Pro Max for a period of time.

Although screen burn-in is a common problem with OLED screens, Apple and many manufacturers have used various methods such as software to prevent screen burn-in and other problems.

Apple’s official introduction is as follows:

OLED displays may also show slight visual changes over long-term use. This is also a normal phenomenon and may include "image afterimage" or "screen burn", where a blurry afterimage of the previous image remains on the screen even after the display shows a new image. Image retention is temporary and will disappear after a few minutes of normal use.

Our Super Retina and Super Retina XDR displays are engineered to mitigate the effects of OLED burn-in and are the first in the industry. A special algorithm monitors the usage of individual pixels to generate display calibration data. iPhone uses this data to automatically adjust the brightness of each pixel as needed to reduce the visual impact of screen burn and maintain a consistent viewing experience.

Users report that iPhone models launched by Apple every year have screen burn-in problems.

Allstate Protection Plans recently conducted a more scientific and rigorous durability car test, testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra, both priced at US$1,199; and phones, both priced at US$1,799. Galaxy Z Fold5 and Pixel Fold in US dollars.

Water-proof test

All four flagship models have passed the immersion test and can work normally after being immersed in 6 feet of water for 30 minutes.

Drop test

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Galaxy S23 Ultra both shattered after being dropped face down from a height of 6 feet (Note: about 1.83 meters) to the concrete floor.

In the front-side screen-down drop test, the iPhone 15 Pro Max shattered on the first drop and became unusable due to raised and loose glass shards. The same thing happened with the Galaxy S23.

Note: The Z Fold5 and Google Pixel Fold were able to withstand two downward screen drops, which resulted in frame damage, screen dents, and scuffs, which Allstate attributes to a raised edge around the inner edge of each display.

In the drop test with the back facing down, both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra shattered immediately. The iPhone 15 Pro Max still works fine, but two of the cameras no longer work due to damage to the camera glass.

Allstate Protection Plans tests iPhones every year, and even though Apple has upgraded the glass, there hasn’t been much of an improvement. Apple is using stronger glass on the back and a super-ceramic panel on the front, but glass is still glass and can still crack after it hits the ground.

Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today issued an article for the current Apple iPhone 15 Pro cell phone overheating problem for interpretation, and said “with TSMC 3nm process has nothing to do”.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, “My research indicates that the overheating issue on the iPhone 15 Pro series has nothing to do with TSMC’s 3nm process, but is likely due to compromises made in the design of the cooling system in order to make the device lighter, such as a smaller cooling area and the use of titanium alloys that affect the heat dissipation effect. Apple is expected to fix this issue with a system update, but unless the processor performance is reduced, the improvement may be limited. If Apple doesn’t properly address this issue, it could be detrimental to shipments of the iPhone 15 Pro series product cycle.”

▲ iPhone 15 Pro Max

In addition, the two models in Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro lineup are using titanium cases for the first time, and as a result have suffered a series of problems. According to previous report, some users complained that the new machine shell is prone to scratches, titanium alloy bezel discoloration, poor performance of drop resistance, etc., which need to be resolved by Apple in the subsequent generations of products one after another.
