Apple Maps has a privacy bug that allows the app to collect location data without user permission. Apple has fixed this bug in the latest iOS 16.3 update.

According to Brazilian journalist Rodrigo Ghedin, the local delivery app iFood can still use the bug to track users’ locations in iOS 16.2, even if they turn off the app’s access to their locations.

iFood is the largest takeaway app in Brazil, with a company valuation of $5.4 billion. After the app turned off access to its location, the iFood app was still able to get users’ location information.

Arstechnica security writer Dan Goodin asks a number of questions: How long has this vulnerability existed? What other apps have exploited it? How much location data has been collected using it?

There may be many other apps that have not yet been exposed that use this bug to track users’ location information, so we recommend that iPhone users into iOS 16.3 as soon as possible to prevent apps from using this bug to track you.

After digging deeper into the code for iOS 16.3 release candidate, foreign user @iSWUpdates suggests that Apple is still working on a standalone classical music app. The release candidate is the last stage of development before the official release, and there will be no more major tweaks to the features or interface, so Apple is expected to release iOS 16.3 to the public next week.

According to information unearthed by @iSWUpdates, Apple has quietly adjusted the existing Apple Music app description on the iPhone: “A Shortcut to Apple Classical” has been changed to “Open in Apple Music Classical”. From the description, Apple has changed the name of the app to “Apple Music Classical,” but it’s not sure what the specific name will be after the launch.

Apple mentioned “Explore this artist in the App designed for classical music” in another line of code.

In August 2021, Apple announced that it was acquiring the classical music service Primephonic and planned to release a dedicated classical music app in 2022, but that app did not launch in 2022.

“Apple Music plans to launch a dedicated classical music app next year that incorporates Primephonic’s classical user interface with additional add-ons that fans will love,” Apple said in a 2021 press release.

The Primephonic classical music service closed in September 2021, when subscribers received six months of Apple Music usage for free. If a new app is eventually launched, the Apple Classical Music app will serve as a replacement for Primephonic, offering users a classical music experience with Beethoven and Mozart, among others.

Apple today pushed the iOS / iPadOS 16.3 Developer Preview Beta 2 update (internal version number: 20D5035i) to iPhone and iPad users, 27 days after the last release.

Apple iOS

Apple has not officially listed the specifics of this update, and its not been found in the developer documentation.

Apple introduced support for physical security keys in iOS 16.3 as an additional protection for Apple ID. security keys for Apple ID will provide users with the option to add a third-party security key to their account, which will be required for authentication when signing in to a new device or otherwise accessing their Apple ID.

The security key is intended to replace the verification code sent to an Apple device when signing in to another device, which is the standard authentication method used by Apple. Apple says physical security keys provide strong protection against phishing and unauthorized account access. Security keys can be set up on devices running the beta by going to Apple ID > Security Keys and following the instructions. iPhone, iPad and Mac support FIDO Authentication, and Security Keys.

iOS 16.3 updates

In addition, Apple has included a new guide in iOS 16.3 to help and guide users on how to transfer and control music from their iPhone to their HomePod. Users can move their iPhones closer to HomePod to view playback controls or transfer audio between devices.
