In the latest iOS 16.1 beta, Apple has tweaked the design of the Lingering Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to make it more visible against dark backgrounds. When using a dark wallpaper or a dark interface with Dark Mode activated, a light grey border will appear around the outside of the Lingering Island when the screen is dark or when the island is in active use.

The border is not displayed on light wallpapers where the outline of the Lingering Island is already visible and disappears when the iPhone is unlocked or when the Lingering Island is not used. If you play music or use an app that displays content in Dynamic Island, the border will show up again.

In iOS 16.0.2, the dynamic island had a very faint border around it, but the iOS 16.1 beta makes it more visible. It’s unclear why Apple made this change and what it ultimately added to the Lingering Island interface. For those who use a dark background to make the Lingering Island blend in better with the screen around it, the new outline doesn’t do much and could instead be seen as a distraction.

Users of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max now need to know that the recently released beta version of iOS 16.1 is preventing GPS from working properly on many users’ devices, meaning anyone who relies on location tracking should avoid the beta for now.

iPhone 14 Pro owners who already have iOS 16.1 beta installed will have to downgrade to iOS 16.0.1 or wait until a later iOS 16.1 beta fixes the issue to restore GPS functionality, and it is unclear what is causing the bug.

Like the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 14 Pro model has dual-band GPS support, meaning that the iPhone can receive signals from more GPS satellites that operate on the traditional L1 frequency and the higher-powered L5 frequency, which can better traverse obstacles such as buildings and trees, and the combination of these two signals can significantly improve the mapping The combination of these two signals can significantly improve the positioning accuracy of apps and the like.

In iOS 16.1 Beta, which went live yesterday, Apple has enabled a new Live Activities to feature that allows iPhone users to see what’s happening in real-time on the lock screen, such as the latest event scores, delivery orders, and more.

In the TV app, tapping the Follow button during a sporting event displays a Live Activity on the lock screen with a live scoreboard and play-by-play action, such as a baseball player striking out on a fastball.

Live Activity will be displayed at the bottom of the lock screen on iPhone 13 and earlier models. On iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Live Activity will appear at the top of the lock screen on Dynamic Island, a new pill-shaped area around the Face ID sensor and a front-facing camera that expands to show system alerts and other content.
