According to users to Mozilla’s bug feedback, Firefox 110 Firefox browser encountered a strange problem, when visiting BestBuy.com shows “your browser is no longer supported, please download the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge”.

Firefox developers investigated and found that the problem may be due to a misinterpretation of the browser’s UA (User Agent) string.

The UA information for Firefox 110 is as follows.

Some websites only check whether rv:11* matches when testing whether the browser is supported, which means that rv:110.0 and rv:11.0 are treated as the same content, so Firefox 110 is treated as Microsoft IE 11 and this strange problem occurs.

Firefox developers have frozen rv:110.0 and are now temporarily using rv:109.0 as a replacement, and will not have this problem until Firefox version 120 (rv:120.0), which is after Firefox version 120 is released on September 25, 2023.

Microsoft says the change won’t affect businesses that have abandoned IE in favor of the Chromium Edge-based browser because it has IE mode, better compatibility and other improvements.

According to Microsoft, those who still rely on IE should act now to avoid a sudden disruption in business after February 14, 2023, when Microsoft will shut down support for the browser altogether.

In fact, removing IE from Windows is hardly a quick fix. Internet Explorer (IE) was announced for retirement on June 15, but IE11 isn’t really dead, nor is it completely dead. Microsoft explained that the disabling process was long, and that was just the beginning.

In the next few months, older IE browsers can be completely disabled next year before redirecting users who try to open IE to IE mode in Microsoft Edge until Microsoft forcibly disables IE in February next year, followed by non-security updates (mandatory) to be released on May 23 (optional) and June to forcibly remove IE 11 icons (files) from computers.

Microsoft will also stop releasing feature and security updates for the Edge browser on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 in January 2023. Currently, Microsoft, Google and other companies are advising users to update to Windows 10 or 11 series to keep their computers safe.

Microsoft has already retired Internet Explorer, and now the software giant is preparing the next step in the classic browser’s demise. The company has issued a new warning that Internet Explorer will be shut down for good in February next year, so users are once again being advised to abandon the browser in favor of a modern alternative.

Without a doubt, the modern alternative recommended by Microsoft is Microsoft Edge, which also comes with a built-in IE mode that helps users run applications in Internet Explorer compatibility mode.

“As part of the Windows Security Update (“B” release) scheduled for February 14, 2023, retired, unsupported Internet Explorer 11 desktop applications will be permanently shut down.” Microsoft explains, “Please visit the Internet Explorer 11 Desktop Application Retirement FAQ for more information.”

Internet Explorer will be disabled in Windows following optional updates to the Windows operating system in January 2023. These updates are scheduled to begin pushing on Jan. 17, and they will serve as a preview of the next Patch Tuesday update due Feb. 14, 2023.

“Staying on unsupported versions of Windows 10 will not prevent redirection — IE11 desktop applications will be redirected to Microsoft Edge on both supported and unsupported versions of Windows 10. In addition, it will not work on unsupported versions of Windows 10 (such as Windows 10, versions 1909 and 2004) IE11,” Microsoft explained.

“Windows 10, versions 20H2 and later are the only versions of Windows 10 supported when IE11 is retired. IE11 is not supported on any version of Windows 10 prior to 20H2. We do not recommend that customers use unsupported versions of Windows 10 on their organization’s devices. And we recommend that customers move to a supported version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 and set up Microsoft Edge with Internet Explorer mode (IE mode).”
