The Internet Explorer 11 browser will officially stop support on February 14, 2023, but it has not completely disappeared in the field of individual users and enterprises.

In a recent blog post released by Microsoft, Microsoft introduced the follow-up operations on disabling the IE11 browser. The summary information is as follows:

Microsoft will release an optional non-secure "C" update on May 23, 2023, removing visual references to the IE11 browser in some Win10 versions.

Microsoft will release Windows security updates (“B” category) on Patch Tuesday, June 13, 2023, removing visual references in Windows systems, including the IE11 icon in the Start menu and taskbar, and more.

Microsoft says IE11 will no longer be supported on June 15, 2022, and will be permanently disabled on February 14, 2023. These changes are designed to provide a better user experience and smooth the transition for users from IE11 to Microsoft Edge, ensuring a faster, safer, and more modern web experience.

Microsoft launched a “gift” on Valentine’s Day today: permanently disabling the Internet Explorer 11 desktop browser. Microsoft Edge update will disable the Internet Explorer 11 desktop browser, designed to provide a better user experience and help organizations transition Internet Explorer 11 users to Microsoft Edge,” Microsoft said.

Unsupported Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop applications are scheduled to be permanently disabled on certain versions of Windows 10 devices on February 14, 2023 via a Microsoft Edge update (rather than the previously communicated Windows update).

Microsoft plans to redirect all remaining devices that have not yet been redirected from IE11 to Microsoft Edge by releasing a Microsoft Edge update starting February 14, 2023.

The change to disable IE with Microsoft Edge updates is intended to provide a better user experience and help organizations convert their last remaining IE11 users to Microsoft Edge. as a reminder, IE11 has been unsupported since June 15, 2022.

Organizations that have transitioned from IE11 to Microsoft Edge with IE mode will not be affected when the IE11 desktop application is scheduled to be permanently disabled on February 14, 2023.

Note: If you want to remove the IE visual object reference on the taskbar or Start menu, you will need to use the Disable IE policy by February 14, 2023. If the organization still relies on IE11, immediate steps must be taken to complete the conversion by February 14, 2023, or risk massive business disruption if users are unable to access applications that rely on IE11.

IE11 visual references (such as the IE11 icon on the Start menu and taskbar) will be removed in the June 2023 Windows Monthly Security Update (“B” version) scheduled for release on June 13, 2023.

They will also be removed in the non-security preview of certain Windows 10 versions scheduled for May 23, 2023.

Microsoft has announced that starting in January 2023, users will be blocked from accessing SharePoint Online and web-side OneDrive through Internet Explorer 11 and Microsoft Edge browser’s IE mode, and is urging users who still use these outdated browsers to upgrade to Microsoft is urging users who still use these outdated browsers to upgrade to “modern browsers,” primarily the Chromium-based Edge browser.

Access after January 2023 will be redirected, requiring users to upgrade their browsers

Microsoft has said this change will take effect in mid-January 2023, meaning users will not be able to access the web-site OneDrive and SharePoint through IE11. Currently, if you use IE11 to access the website OneDrive or SharePoint, you will be redirected to a page reminding you to upgrade your browser. After that date, the redirect page will no longer be displayed and will simply show that the connection request failed.

Last August, Microsoft announced that Microsoft 365 services no longer support IE 11, and this adjustment is to better advance that goal. In June of this year, Microsoft ended support for the IE browser, although there were some signs that it was still lurking in some Windows 11 PCs. As a result, the company updated IE mode in Edge to mitigate some of the usage issues that came with the move.
