Infineon has now launched the EZ-PD USB-C PD solution to support in-vehicle charging applications and multimedia sharing.

According to the introduction, this dual-port USB-C PD (charging) solution integrates a boost controller for in-vehicle charging applications, complies with the latest USB Type-C and PD3.1 specifications, and has received AEC Q-100 certification.

This USB-C PD solution can be specifically used for automotive applications that support a Display port, i.e. USB-C Alternate mode. Deployed on the Ideal L9, the solution not only enables charging of electronic devices using the USB port, but also connects them to the car for multimedia sharing. In addition, the EZ-PD CCG7D is particularly suitable for in-car charging applications such as head-up display chargers, car backseat chargers, car backseat entertainment systems, etc.

Infineon EZ-PD CCG7D charging solution introduction:

The CCG7D-based alternate mode solution is equipped with dual USB-C ports, one of which supports DP-Sink and the other DP-Source, thus creating a bi-directional multimedia entertainment center in the car that can charge USB devices while simultaneously transmitting video from a cell phone or personal computer (PC) to the car display and/or sending video to VR glasses. The CCG7D is highly integrated, effectively reducing BOM costs and board area, and is capable of delivering up to 100 W of output power to each port of the solution. In addition to the CCG7D, Infineon can also offer a single-port version, the EZ-PD CCG7S, which is also AEC Q-100 compliant.

According to DigiTimes and The Elec and other media reports, Samsung Foundry, the foundry division of Samsung Electronics, has expanded its cooperation with German power semiconductor giant Infineon to produce metal oxide – silicon field effect transistors (MOSFETs) for the latter since last year.

Infineon, an international leader in semiconductor industry innovation, offers advanced semiconductor products and complete system solutions for the wired and wireless communications, automotive and industrial electronics, memory, computer security, and chip card markets.

Infineon power MOSFETs are metal-oxide-silicon field-effect transistors designed for low-voltage applications, combining high switching speeds with excellent efficiency. This innovative technology is a core component of many applications, including consumer electronics, power supplies, DC-DC converters, motor controllers, radio frequency (RF) applications, transportation technology and automotive electronics.

Samsung Foundry has the industry’s leading process node, but still not strong enough in the field of analog semiconductors such as power management ICs. The report that power management ICs and logic chips, unlike the smaller the size of the performance will be reduced, so the main use of 90 nanometers or higher conventional node manufacturing.

According to QY Research, the power management IC discrete market was worth $35.28 billion last year and is expected to reach $61.3 billion by 2029, with an average annual growth rate of 8.2%. MOSFETs will have a 35% market share in 2022. Samsung may produce other Infineon power management ICs such as IGBTs, the sources said.

Infineon has won approval to invest 5 billion euros (currently about 36.65 billion yuan) to begin construction of a semiconductor factory in Dresden, Germany, which will start production in 2026, the company said Thursday, Feb. 19.

The automotive and data center chipmaker said it will be the largest investment in its history. Infineon is seeking 1 billion euros in public funding for the plant, which the company says will create about 1,000 jobs.

Infineon said the plant will produce power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal components, and at full capacity, its annual revenue will be comparable to the investment. Analog/mixed-signal components are used in power supply systems such as energy-efficient charging systems, small vehicle motor control units, data centers and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The interaction of power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal components makes it possible to create particularly energy-efficient and intelligent system solutions.

The German Ministry of Economics approved the early start of the project, which allows construction to begin before the European Commission completes its examination of the legal subsidy aspects.

The EU is looking to strengthen semiconductor production amid a global chip shortage over the past two years. Under the European Chip Act, the European Commission has set aside a total of 15 billion euros for public and private semiconductor projects until 2030.

According to Reuters, German chipmaker Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck said in an interview that the company is prepared to spend billions of euros to find suitable acquisition targets.

Hanebeck noted that Infineon had been “looking” for suitable companies, saying he believed “the figure could run into the billions of euros”. According to reports, Infineon has seen growth in the fields of electric vehicles, autonomous driving, renewable energy, data centers and the Internet of Things.

In the fiscal year ending September 2022, Infineon’s revenue increased by nearly 30% to 14.2 billion euros (approximately 105.222 billion yuan), and departmental profits increased by 63% to 3.4 billion euros (approximately 25.194 billion yuan).

Plus, Hanebeck says it’s conceivable that an underfunded startup would want to join a company. But the chief executive would not comment on individual acquisition candidates.
