Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman today revealed that Apple is internally considering adding a touchscreen to its Mac devices. The move would go against the company’s long-standing orthodoxy, which co-founder Steve Jobs once called an “ergonomic disaster. But Patentlyapple, a foreign technology media outlet, said Apple filed a patent for a touchscreen for the iMac back in 2010.

Apple has argued for more than a decade that laptops are not suitable for carrying touch screens and that the iPad is a better choice. Apple is also concerned that a touch-screen version of the Mac could cannibalize iPad sales.

The late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs also once called the touch screen on laptops an “ergonomic disaster” and said the model “doesn’t work.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering for iOS and macOS, publicly emphasized in October 2014 that Apple would not launch an iMac with a touch screen, but in an October 2022 interview with Wall Street Journal reporter Joanna Stern, Federighi gave an ambiguous answer “Who’s to say?” But this is a dramatic change in his position for 2014.

Patently Apple discovered the patent in August 2010 and issued an article, “The Mother Lode: Welcome to the iMac Touch.

Apple has previously opened an educational offer where consumers can receive free AirPods headphones (2nd generation) with the purchase of select Mac or iPad models from July 14 to September 26. Consumers can also make up the difference and exchange them for AirPods Pro. However, with the release of AirPods Pro 2nd generation today, AirPods Pro 1st generation has been removed from Apple’s official website.

According to Apple customer service, Apple has adjusted its policy for the start of the school season. The education offer tied to AirPods 2 can no longer add money to purchase the first generation AirPods Pro, nor support adding money to purchase the second generation AirPods Pro, but only add money to purchase the AirPods 3 Lightning Charging Case version and MagSafe Charging Case version.

It is reported that the eligible devices for this Apple education offer include: iMac (24-inch), MacBook Pro (13-inch / 14-inch / 16-inch) and MacBook Air, iPad Pro (11-inch / 12.9-inch) and iPad Air (fifth generation).

It should be noted that when purchasing products at Apple Store retail stores or through the Apple Store online education store and choosing to pick them up at offline retail stores, you need to present a valid student ID/staff ID or official acceptance notice, as well as your ID card, and provide your ID number for verification.

In addition, Apple is currently giving away gift cards in North America and Europe, while Singapore, India and other Asian countries and regions are still giving away AirPods 2. Sources say that next year’s back-to-school offers will all be replaced with gift cards, and this year may be the last time that AirPods 2 headphones are given away.

Future versions of the iMac could take a more radical form, with Apple considering redesigning the all-in-one desktop to effectively be a curved piece of glass with an embedded display.

The iMac is one of many iconic devices designed by Apple. The all-in-one Mac consists of a thin display that houses the main components and a small stand to hold the display at the user’s eye level. While the design has been improved over the years to make the main screen portion thinner and sleeker, Apple is also mulling more dramatic changes to its design. In a newly granted patent titled “Electronic device with glass enclosure member,” Apple explores the boundaries of the iMac by proposing an iMac that is effectively formed by a single piece of glass.

In its basic form, the patent says, the Mac will consist of a plate with curved lower edges that sits on a tabletop to hold input devices, while a larger flat area will include the embedded display. Glass would form the main support structure holding the display, affixed to the back of the glass, and could include an iSight camera attached in the usual location above the screen.

Because it is one piece, the curved lip is not enough to keep the glass upright during normal use. To solve this problem, Apple proposed using a wedge-shaped section to support the glass, slotted between the lower lip and the main upper panel to accommodate the curved section. The wedge doesn’t just act as a prop; it can have enough volume to hold components such as ports for network connectivity, peripherals, and power. Doing so shaves some weight off the display and glass from the components and gives the wedge more weight to keep it stable.

The angle of the glass can be adjusted by changing its position on the wedge, placing it higher or lower, depending on the user’s preference. To help with its configurability, Apple also proposes that the curve of the glass itself can be adjusted in some cases. Flattening the curve could make the Mac easier to pack or transport, although it could also be folded up for less storage space.
