According to the report, Samsung’s automotive hybrid OLED uses thin-film encapsulation to replace the upper glass substrate, while the 0.5T thick lower glass substrate will be etched into a 0.2T thick UT substrate. The hard screen is thinner and lighter, and is more suitable for the production of curved displays for vehicles.

The report pointed out that Samsung is currently developing hybrid OLED technology in the 6th generation A3 production line. Industry insiders believe that Samsung Display’s mass production of automotive OLEDs through the A3 production line is to produce large-size OLEDs.

Sources pointed out that Samsung’s A2 production line currently producing automotive OLEDs needs to cut the substrate four times to complete the deposition process after the TFT process, but the A3 production line only needs to cut the substrate twice. This also means that the A3 production line can produce large-size displays larger than 30 inches, which is closer to the needs of automakers.

The Omdia report and learned that global automotive display shipments are expected to reach 205 million units in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 5.4%, of which OLED display shipments are about 1 million units.

According to a report on The Elec website, Apple plans to use a special OLED technology, hybrid OLED technology, on future iPads. Hybrid OLED technology can combine rigid and flexible OLED panel materials.

Apple is reluctant to rely entirely on the flexible OLED technology it uses in the iPhone because of the panel’s tendency to “crinkle” and the effect becomes more pronounced as the display gets larger.

While hybrid OLED technology is not yet perfected and will take at least a year to become commercially viable, that means it will need to wait until around 2024 to be used in the iPad product line.

For now, it appears that hybrid OLED panels may be a better option because they are thinner than rigid panels and cheaper than flexible panels.
