Microsoft recently released Windows Holographic version 23H2, which is the next major update Microsoft has launched for HoloLens devices. Windows Holographic version 23H2 (22621.1244) brings NFC card reader support, hand tracking improvements, camera viewfinder, and multiple bug fixes.

Hololens 2

The main updated contents are as follows:

Supports NFC card reader: Users can use an NFC card reader to log in to the HoloLens device. They only need to put the security card with NFC FIDO2 technology close to the USB-C NFC card reader to achieve "tap & enter password" login. experience.

Improved eye tracking speed: For HoloLens 2 users who don’t have eye tracking calibration saved, the device updates eye position (pupillary distance) as soon as the user puts it on, making interactions at close range smoother.

Improved virtual keyboard: added prompts and feedback for voice input, improved the reliability of sliding input, and optimized keyboard suggestions and audio feedback.

Improved hand tracking: The hand tracking system is more reliable when users aim at ground objects.

Improved fonts and input methods: Improved a variety of simplified Chinese fonts and Microsoft Pinyin input method, supporting the GB18030-2022 standard, which can input and display characters in the first or second level character set, and also supports characters in Unicode extensions E and F.

Added camera viewfinder: The HoloLens Camera app now has a viewfinder that shows the scope of an image or video capture. The viewfinder does not block the user's field of view and simply displays indicators of the center and borders.

New IT administrator policies: A number of new policies have been added to facilitate IT administrators to manage HoloLens 2 devices, including renaming devices, controlling Start menu gesture settings, blocking USB peripherals, suggesting domain name logins, adjusting Windows Hello configuration, etc.

Bug fixes and performance improvements: Fixed some bugs that affected user experience, such as page visibility policy, virtual keyboard sliding input, reset button display, setting application search box function, etc., and improved device performance and stability.

Microsoft announced at the annual developer conference Build 2023 that it will extend the advantages of WebView2 to HoloLens 2 and Xbox. This move will allow developers to display dynamic web content in spatially-aware and app-integrated 3D applications while providing media app developers with a better remote debugging experience, improved performance, and support for modern web features.

WebView2 preview, now available in HoloLens 2 preview, allows developers to display dynamic web content in spatially-aware and app-integrated 3D applications.

Additionally, Xbox will get WebView2 support later this year, benefiting media app developers by providing a better remote debugging experience, improved performance, and support for modern web features. This update will facilitate migration from the old EdgeHTML Web View, ensuring a more seamless and enhanced user experience.

The remote access and remote control computer software Teamviewer has started to take advantage of WebView2. During the conference, Microsoft highlighted the numerous benefits of their adoption of WebView2, including enhanced security, reusable architecture, advanced debugging tools, and memory savings.

Microsoft says their internal research and testing shows that using the new API can reduce memory footprint by up to 20%. By using WebView2, developers can incorporate web code into individual parts of their native applications, or build entire native applications within a WebView2 instance. WebView2 also facilitates code sharing, allowing for increased code reuse and reduced development effort across multiple platforms. Microsoft provides full support for WebView2 and is actively merging new feature requests on supported platforms.

Note: WebView2 is powered by the Microsoft Edge browser and provides developers with the benefits of web and native features in their applications, including code sharing capabilities, access to the web ecosystem, and utilization of native features. WebView2 allows embedding web content in native applications, it is based on the Chromium open source project, and uses the Edge (Chromium) browser as the rendering engine.

According to foreign technology media MIXED reported that the U.S. Army plans to officially use the HoloLens 2-based Integrated Audio Visual System (IVAS) in 2023. A few months ago, there were reports that the IVAS headset had many problems in the testing process, which is good news for Microsoft if the news is true.

According to the 10-year agreement signed by Microsoft and the U.S. Army, Microsoft will receive a huge return of $21.9 billion if the project is successful. But after the agreement was signed, the IVAS project didn’t go well, with numerous reports of problems.

Douglas Bush, the assistant secretary for acquisition, made a public statement about the IVAS program in September, saying Microsoft had begun delivering the first IVAS combat headsets. He said at the time that the test results performed well and was confident that the project would be successful.

But Bloomberg published an in-depth opinion piece in October that said IVAS had serious negative effects on soldiers. 80 percent of soldiers experienced “mission-impairing physical impairments” (including headaches, eyestrain and nausea) after three hours of wear. Another report revealed by Business Insider stated that IVAS affected soldiers’ performance on the battlefield. At the time, it was reported that Microsoft had addressed the issue, but the IVAS still failed the entire six-point evaluation process.

After the OnPodcast podcast explored TikTok’s Metaverse Max, OnMSFT reported on how Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed reality headset is helping European manufacturing giant Novo Nordisk. In a press release on Monday, Elliott Smith detailed Novo Nordisk’s use of HoloLens 2.

As an enterprise-class device, Novo Nordisk is most optimistic about the “Augmented Instructions” operation brought by Hololens 2, which can help employees easily grasp the new process requirements.

Compared to boring traditional paper instructions, this mixed reality (MR) headset not only provides 3D instructions but also provides demonstrations of production line processes such as turning levers/bolts.

In addition, the pharmaceutical giant emphasized the Remote Assist experience, with Novo Nordisk technician Alex Knudsen saying.

“We don’t have to wait for an engineer to arrive on-site, we can just put on the HoloLens and get guidance on the process, which is obviously a great option.”
