YouTuber @Iskandar Souza and @PauloGomes investigation found that many sellers of mining cards are not honest, they will be somehow mining cards packaged as “new graphics cards” mixed into the market.

While both high-pressure water gun cleaning and ultrasonic + board wash cleaning are said to descale PCBs, the chip part is not so easy to “revive”. Although some burst GPU cores can be replaced, but this is undoubtedly a significant increase in labor costs. In this case, consumers wanting to buy a good color of the mining card is not easy, and now there are “refurbished” memory chips, again deepening the difficulty of distinguishing.

As the picture shows, the GPU cores of some mining cards can still perform well after a long workout, but the chip parts show a distinct yellowish-brown color, which means the surface is darkened, discolored or melted.

Paulo says that trying to identify a used card requires extremely careful inspection, whether it’s a missing sticker or a scratch from a screwdriver that should make you suspicious. However, even though some cards may appear to be new (including the original warranty sticker, which is free of dust or scratches), there’s still a chance they’re not.

By far the easiest area to spot are the signs of aging on the memory and GPU cores, the yellow parts, but there are always a few traders who like to be clever and have even worked out ways to paint the memory chips to make them look newer than they really are.

The good thing is that this hot paint material can be removed, so the chip color is significantly different from the lower color, which means that this is most likely a “refurbished card”, but this way is certainly a test of the consumer’s hands-on ability, after all, you need to remove the heat sink first to check whether the card is artificially colored traces.

It is worth mentioning that the PCB with the GPU core will also have discoloration problems after a long time of mining, although miners can also be refurbished in this way, but because of the high cost, so few miners will do so, most of these people will only be refurbished for the video memory part.

The yellow marks on the memory and GPU cores may be due to prolonged heating or resoldering, but whatever the cause is, it suggests that this card is not new. paulo also showed a number of examples of what a GPU looks like after mining.

It is recommended that if consumers do not have certain identification and hands-on skills, it is recommended to buy the graphics card in the official website channels to avoid the problem of second-hand graphics cards “to hand on the waste”, at least there are problems can also be in the official warranty.

Affected by the encryption cold, many mining farms have closed down, which has also resulted in a large number of mining cards, including some unconventional graphics cards. For example, the XFX Radeon RX 6700 XL graphics card to be introduced next in this article adopts a customizable, three-fan model, which should be specially designed for mining.

This is the first time this model has been spotted, which raises the question: How many models of graphics cards don’t make it into the PC realm and go straight to mining cryptocurrencies?

According to the label on the card, this XFX Radeon RX 6700 XL card uses 10GB of video memory. Due to the complexity of the launch, the model did not initially make it to the customer market.

AMD has been offering scaled-down Navi 22 GPUs to its partners, but the companies don’t plan to sell them to gamers. Most AMD Ryzen RX 6700 XL and non-XT card variants are sold to the crypto mining community. AMD won’t officially launch Radeon RX 6700 graphics cards until June 2022, although they were previously sold as the BC-2235 crypto mining card.

Unlike Sapphire, which announced the Radeon RX 6700 GPU (non-XT variant), XFX has yet to officially release this card. The product label ensures its memory configuration and SKU number. The heatsink says “QICK”, but the label on the GPU says “SWFT (309)”, two series sold separately by XFX.

Graphics card models feature dual 8-pin power connectors and a heatsink that measures 2.5 slots. This graphics card is perfect for gamers or users looking for a budget build to compete with Intel, and the company’s recently announced Intel Arc A7-series GPUs are on the way.

NVIDIA’s Q2 FY23 earnings report released a few days ago acknowledged the previously teased overall decline in the gaming business, with revenue down 33%, quarterly earnings plummeting 72%, and tens of billions of dollars in inventory and the situation will worsen in Q3. Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said they will work with retailers to adjust prices to meet market challenges. In other words, RTX 30 series graphics cards will continue to drop in price.

Graphics card prices have plummeted over the past few months, with prices for RTX 30 and RX 6000 series cards in the U.S. market dropping significantly over the months from April to July, with A cards down an average of 29% and N cards down an average of 26%.

The situation converged in July, as graphics card prices fell, and the latest data shows that graphics card prices are still falling in August, but not as dramatically as before, with AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards falling by an average of about 6%.

After all, the current AMD and NVIDIA graphics card prices have been lower than the recommended price, manufacturers are anxious to clear inventory, but not willing to sell at a loss, the current price of the price reduction space is not much.

However, there is another important test in September, that is, the Ethernet upgrade 2.0, officially abandoning the PoW mechanism (proof of workload mechanism), to PoS (proof of interest mechanism), this shift will completely end graphics card mining, the merger time on September 10 to 20.

If the merger goes well, then more mining cards will be eliminated in September, and these mining cards will be transformed into the second-hand graphics card market, further lowering the price of graphics cards, whether the price of graphics cards will collapse again depends on the big test this time.

Don’t be anxious to buy a card, wait for the September graphics card price changes, and September’s GTC conference, NVIDIA is also basically sure to release RTX 40 series graphics cards, high play can consider the new card.

According to 3DCenter, the main graphics card models from Nvidia and AMD have been reduced to the recommended retail price.

According to reports, the average minimum price of Nvidia and AMD graphics cards has previously dropped below the suggested retail price. This time the media statistics are “major models” including the RX 6800, 6800 XT and RTX 3080 10GB, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti. As the chart above shows, as of August 21, these “major models” are priced at 97% of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

The most obvious price cuts in the domestic high-end models, but the RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Ti and other popular mainstream models have lower price cuts, and the current models of major manufacturers are still higher than Nvidia’s suggested retail price. With AMD and NVIDIA’s new generation of graphics card releases approaching, graphics card prices are expected to continue to dip.
