Google is improving Google TV to make applications smaller and faster. Back in February, Google announced the update to make it easier to find content on Google TV, with additional improvements that will help free up space and speed up system performance.

Google blog said that the new feature of App Hibernation will help Google TV automatically force the application to sleep, and when the application is not used for more than 30 days, the hibernation will start; this update is applicable to Android S (Note: Android 12) and Update your device and it optimizes your system’s storage space when the app goes to sleep. In addition, the Google TV community page announced that Android App Bundles will be used to reduce the size of applications by 25%, which can only be applied to the set of applications that are needed.

Google has also shortened the time it takes to wake up Google TV, in addition to improving the response time between TV and remote button presses, and the time it takes to load animations on restart has also been shortened.

Google announced that these new features have been rolled out, and more improvements are expected to be rolled out before the end of 2023, aiming to enhance the overall user experience of Google TV.

Starting in May 2023, Google TV and Android TV require Android installers to transition from the current APK format to the AAB (Android App Bundle) format. This requirement has already been implemented in Android smartphones.

Android App Bundle is a publishing format that contains all the compiled code and resources of your application, and it will hand over APK generation and signing to Google Play. According to Google, there are many benefits to switching to the AAB format, including a 20% reduction in the average AAB space footprint, a 60% reduction in storage usage, and more. In addition, Google emphasized that the AAB format is helpful for running Android applications in various device forms, and can make operations such as application updates smoother through the Google Play Store.

Although there is only a 6-month transition period, it sounds tense. However, Google said that it only takes about three days for an engineer to repackage their APK application into AAB. Google has warned developers that their apps could be hidden in TV devices after next May if they haven’t been retrofitted.

Google is bringing a host of new kid-centric features to Google TV, such as parent-controlled watch lists and artificial intelligence-based content suggestions, the latest in a series of efforts by the Android developer as it tries to expand what its TV operating system offers for home consumption.

The company says it is adding these features to the content profiles that kids can see to improve content recommendations and exploration. In a blog post, the company explained that parents can push titles from their profiles directly to their kids’ “must-see” lists (just click the watch list button on the title they come across and press add).

The company has also introduced AI-driven recommendations for kids, who can now view popular shows and movies on their Google TV home screen based on installed apps and parent-defined rating levels. If they don’t like what’s been recommended to them and don’t want to see it anymore, they can press and hold the select button and then click “hide” to remove the recommendation from the list.

These new additions are part of Google’s ongoing efforts to make its service more kid-friendly. Google introduced supervised accounts for YouTube last year to help children migrate from YouTube Kids to the main YouTube app in a safe way.

This feature also allows parents to place restrictions on content exploration, comments or video creation. It allows guardians to define three levels of access.” Explore” for viewers ages 9 and up; “More Explore” for viewers ages 13 and up; and “Most YouTube” for access to all videos, regardless of age-restricted content.

The search giant said it will also bring this supervised experience to Google TV so kids can access the main YouTube app with appropriate content restrictions. Notably, when parents set up these supervised accounts, they consent to the collection and use of data collected from children’s profiles to comply with COPPA – the U.S. privacy law that imposes restrictions on sites that provide services to children.

The company first introduced Kids Profiles on Google TV last year, allowing parents to place restrictions on app access and screen time.

Google said these features are rolling out starting today on Chromecast with Google TV (both 4K and HD versions) and other Google TV devices from manufacturers such as Hisense, Philips, Sony and TCL.

Doesn’t it sound great to get free streaming TV channels without having to download an app or sign up for a new service? 9to5Google has decompiled the latest version of the software and reports that the TV streaming platform Google TV (previously known as Android TV) contains text that suggests 50 free live TV channels.

Based on the text found in the app, the supposed new feature appears to be called “Google TV Channels”. There is also an image in the software that hints at what channels will be included in the new service.

It’s the usual lineup of free Internet streaming channels like ABC News Live, NBC News Live and USA Today, as well as a bunch of basic classic content channels like Divorce Court, American Classics and Deal or no Deal. You’ll even get to also see the movie channels Hallmark Movies, Reelz Channel and more.

Many of these channels are readily available on other familiar free or cheap streaming TV services, including Pluto TV, Philo, and Sling TV, but these are services you have to sign up for in advance.

And Google’s new policy is similar to the approach TV makers (like LG and Samsung) have taken with their smart TVs, which allows users to start watching directly to buyers with just a few clicks on the remote. Google’s 50 channels may not sound like much compared to LG Channels’ 175+ channels and Samsung TV Plus’ 200+ channels, but you may not have to buy a brand new TV or download an app to start accessing free live online content: the
