Today’s Google Doodle lets you make, play and share your own mini-arcade games in honor of video game console pioneer Jerry Lawson. Lawson led the team that developed the first home video game system with interchangeable game cartridges. Today would have been his 82nd birthday.

Interactive Doodle begins by taking you through a short experience that introduces you to Lawson and his legacy. The first part of the experience is a tutorial that teaches you about the basic controls and editing features. From there, you navigate to five ready-to-play games. You can play these games as is, or click on the pencil icons to edit them.

If you want to create your own game, you can navigate to the main screen, click on the empty box icon with the plus sign, and once you’ve finished creating it, use the share button to send it to your friends.

The five improv games were designed by three American artists and game designers, Davionne Gooden, Lauren Brown and Momo Pixel.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1940, Lawson has been tinkering with electronics since he was a child. He began his career in Palo Alto, California, and joined Fairchild Semiconductor as an engineering consultant. He led the development of the Fairchild Channel F system (F for fun), the first home video game system with interchangeable game cartridges, an 8-way digital joystick, and a pause menu. The system laid the foundation for future game systems such as the Atari, SNES, Dreamcast and others that were developed based on this concept.

In 1980, Lawson left Fairchild to start his own company, VideoSoft, one of the first black-owned video game development companies. videoSoft created a line of software for the Atari 2600 that popularized the cartridge games developed by Lawson and his team.

As the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar on Sunday, Google has launched a new homepage doodle and a new multiplayer game to celebrate with fans around the world. The animated doodle features a pair of richly colored soccer cleats practicing their passes as the world watches the biggest event in global soccer.

Fans who want to get in on the action themselves can Google “World Cup Qatar 2022” on their mobile devices and compete online with other fans around the world.

The World Cup pits the world’s best 32 national teams against each other to find out which country can claim dominance of the sport for the next four years. The tournament is usually held every four years during June and July, but because Qatar’s desert climate is too hot in the summer to properly host the tournament, this is the first time the tournament has been held in November and the schedule has been reduced by four days. The Qatar World Cup also marks the first time the tournament has been hosted by a Middle Eastern country, and the tournament will conclude on Dec. 18.

Fox has the exclusive English-language rights to broadcast the World Cup in the United States. Many live TV services in the U.S. are available on FS1 and local Fox stations, namely Sling TV Blue, YouTube TV, Hulu Plus Live TV, DirecTV Stream and FuboTV. click here for the full World Cup schedule.

Tuesday’s Google doodle celebrates the invention of the steel drum, a percussion instrument made from a 55-gallon steel cargo drum that produces music by hitting different-sized indentations on the drum’s convex belly with a mallet, CNET reported.

Widely considered the only major instrument invented in the 20th century, the steel drum originated in the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930s, but its history can be traced back to enslaved blacks brought to the Caribbean in the 1700s. A video doodle drawn by Trinidad and Tobago artist Nicolas Huggins takes people on a musical journey to learn some of the history of the steel drum.

After slavery was abolished in 1834, former slaves were allowed to use their drums in carnival celebrations. But after a series of riots in 1881, the British government banned African percussion. It was replaced by the practice of beating with bamboo sticks, a practice that was also banned, sparking protests and demonstrations.

During these protests, the practice of making improvised percussion instruments from metal objects such as car parts, paint cans, garbage cans, oil drums and cookie tins emerged. By the 1930s, the orchestra known as ” tamboo bamboo” was dominated by these metal instruments, largely abandoning the bamboo stick.

After the end of World War II, musicians began using 55-gallon oil drums discarded by oil refineries. Pianists – as they were known – began experimenting with different sized areas of the container’s surface and found that the raised areas produced a different sound than the flat areas. These discoveries, and others related to the shape and size of the container, gave rise to a new family of steel drum instruments.

In 1992, the steel drum was declared the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago and is now popular at concerts around the world, including Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for the Arts.
