A court spokesman said on Monday that after a jury deliberated, Google’s Chromecast and other devices infringed on screen-throwing patents held by Touchstream Technologies.

Touchstream filed the lawsuit in 2021, claiming that its founder, David Strober, invented the video technology in 2010 that allows compact devices like smartphones to cast a screen onto a larger screen like a TV.

Google discussed its technology with Touchstream in December 2011; in February 2012, Google said it wasn’t interested; and in 2013, Google launched its Chromecast devices, the suit says.

Touchstream claims that Google’s Chromecast infringes three patents by replicating its technological advances. The company further stated that Google’s Home and Nest smart speakers, as well as third-party TVs and speakers equipped with Chromecast capabilities, also infringe on their patents.

In response, Google refuted any infringement of Touchstream’s intellectual property and argued that the patents were invalid.

Google’s representative, Jose Castaneda, said that the company “has always developed technology independently and competed on the basis of its own creativity.” Castaneda said that Google plans to appeal the decision.

The Chromecast TV Stick with Google TV first launched in October 2020 and has only received a handful of updates since then, such as security patches and bug fixes, as well as App-based updates that provide features like user profiles.

Chromecast only comes with 8GB of storage, so it’s a bit of a hassle to update either the system or the apps. A Google spokesperson said that storage improvements will be made to Google TV, but did not elaborate further.

Android 12 brings camera/microphone privacy indicator and masking, 4K UI support, and support for some other minor tweaks to Google TV.

Developer Kuba Wojciechowski claims to have obtained the parameters of the Chromecast HD, with Amlogic S805X2 processor and support for AV1 decoding, but with a video output limit of 1080p, a downgrade from the previous 4K version.

In addition, Chromecast HD will come with Android 12-based software, making it the first Google TV 12 streamer. The device will also support virtual A/B seamless updates with compression, which means you can use system B while updating system A and switch directly to system A when the update is complete, and you can skip the step of downloading the update to storage.

Chromecast HD is expected to come with 1.5GB of RAM, and with Android 13’s 2GB RAM requirement, it’s possible the device won’t be upgraded to Android 13.
