A leaked internal memo shows that even in the ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence chat technology impact, Google still on its intelligent assistant Google Assistant pin high hopes. The memo shows that Google is applying the latest large language model (LLM) technology to Google Assistant to make it “super-enhanced”.

This year at the developer conference, Google introduced a lot of content about artificial intelligence. However, Google did not introduce much information about Google Assistant at the conference. In a world of AI chat technologies like ChatGPT, Bing Chat, and even Google’s own Bard, Google Assistant seemed to have few opportunities, and some questioned whether Google Assistant was doomed to failure.

That doesn’t seem to be the case, though, according to the memo above, which — which was supposed to be circulated internally within Google among the Google Assistant, Bard and related teams — explains some of the reorganizations the company is undergoing. The goal is to “explore what a hyper-enhanced Google Assistant, powered by the latest LLM technology, could look like.” Google says it’s “deeply committed” to Google Assistant and knows it’s key to helping meet “the strong demand from people for assistive, conversational technologies that improve their lives.” The memo also said that the company will “start the journey on mobile”.

Currently Google Assistant on Android already offers a feature powered by LLM: web content summarization. It’s likely that many of the upcoming LLM technology features will be available on Android/iOS first.

Theoretically, these LLM technologies will also appear in Google Assistant-powered smart home products, such as smart speakers and smart displays. However, the memo does not mention these systems. Additionally, the memo confirms that some team members will be eliminated. Google has given affected employees 60 days to find other positions within the company.

The video compares Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Samsung Bixby, the four voice assistants, through four rounds of testing to compare who is the best intelligent assistant in 2022.

MKBHD had put out a comparison video of voice assistants in 2017. 5 years later, MKBHD still awarded the best voice assistant to Google Assistant, while Amazon’s Alexa performed the worst. And Siri came in second to last.

In this test Siri mainly had problems handling multiple countdowns. On the HomePod and even the Apple Watch, Siri can set multiple countdowns, while on the iPhone, Siri can only set 1 countdown. In terms of response speed, both Siri and Samsung’s Bixby had lagging answers.

All four assistants are good at answering facts when prompted with specific questions. However, it’s the follow-up questions that give Bixby and Alexa the most headaches. Siri and Assistant were competitive when it came to conversational questioning, but MKBHD’s testing showed that Assistant was able to stick to a longer context than Siri.

Siri also falls short when it comes to device control. Google Assistant and Samsung’s Bixby are able to launch voice recordings and play specific shows on Netflix. siri seems to just launch the relevant apps without taking any further steps.

Siri also didn’t fare well when it came to taking selfies by voice. Google Assistant launched the Camera app and switched to the front-facing camera, and started a countdown before taking a photo. Siri just launched the camera, even though voice control was fully capable of driving the camera app on the iPhone.

In Google’s official blog, The Keyword, Google announced that it is preparing to merge all user reminders into Google Tasks, where reminders created through Google Assistant and Google Calendar will jump to the Google Tasks app, where users can browse, organize and manage them in one place.

Google says the Tasks app can integrate all reminders, including reminders created in Gmail for a message received, a task created in Google Chat, and Tasks created using Google Calendar.

After a few months, when users create a new reminder using Google Assistant, they will see a pop-up on their phone or computer reminding them to set up Google Tasks, and if you haven’t already done so, your Assistant reminders will be moved to Tasks.
