Google recently launched a new tool called Geospatial Creator for developers and creators who want to create and launch augmented reality (AR) experiences in real addresses.

Powered by the ARCore and Google Maps platforms, the tool utilizes realistic 3D tiles to visualize and augment real-world 3D geometry.

Using the Geospatial Creator tool, developers can obtain 3D data of a specified area and move in the area like Google Earth.

Developers can locate, place and anchor 3D content with sub-meter precision within the area covered by Google Street View at any given latitude, longitude and altitude. Users can also use terrain anchors and roof anchors to place 3D content relative to ground and building geometry.

Users can access Geospatial Creator through ARCore Extensions in Unity, Geospatial Pre-release in Adobe Aero.

Google claims that even ordinary users with little programming ability can use Geospatial Creator to create world-anchored immersive experiences in minutes. The tool is designed to make the world a canvas for AR creations and empower users to bring their creative visions to life.

Google’s AR (augmented reality) capabilities are open to the public and can be used by other manufacturers to enhance the user experience. For example, Google is using AR in its Lens app to provide features like image translation. In addition, Google AR can be used in the Google Maps app to find directions.

To bring the same AR capabilities to third-party apps, Google is using its ARCore Software Development Kit (SDK) to certify devices, including phones and tablets. Now Google has added 15 Samsung Galaxy devices to the ARCore list. To receive ARCore certification, smartphones must meet performance benchmarks for camera operation, CPU functionality, sensor accuracy, and more.

Google last updated its ARCore device list in July 2022. The following is a list of 15 Samsung devices that have received ARCore certification.

  • Galaxy A13 5G
  • Galaxy A22
  • Galaxy A52s 5G
  • Galaxy A73 5G
  • Galaxy F42 5G / Wide5
  • Galaxy M22
  • Galaxy M52 5G
  • Galaxy M53 5G
  • Galaxy S21 FE 5G
  • Galaxy Tab S7 FE
  • Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G
  • Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G
  • Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G
  • Galaxy XCover 6 Pro
  • Galaxy Quantum 3

The latest Google ARCore list does not include Samsung’s recently launched high-end flagships Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, or Galaxy S23 Ultra. It’s not that these devices can’t get Google ARCore certification because they are equipped with top-notch hardware, but the exact reason is unclear. It’s only a matter of time before the Galaxy S23 series is expected to appear on the ARCore certification list.
