General Motors’ vehicle sales in the United States increased by 14.1% last year, which was the company’s best sales year since 2019.

Data show that General Motors’ full-year vehicle sales in 2023 will be 2,594,698 vehicles (a year-on-year increase of 14.1%), including 625,176 vehicles in the fourth quarter (Note: The company sold approximately 2.3 million vehicles in 2022 and 2019 respectively. and 2.9 million vehicles).

Sales of the Buick brand increased 61%, followed by mainstream brand Chevrolet with a 13.1% increase. Sales for the GMC and Cadillac brands each increased about 9% in 2023.

It is worth mentioning that although General Motors’ pure electric vehicle sales in 2023 are not bad, they will only account for 2.9% (75,883 units). The vast majority of them are the discontinued Chevrolet Bolt models. However, the Alton platform pure electric vehicles Sales are still growing steadily.

In the fourth quarter, General Motors sold a total of 19,469 all-electric vehicles, accounting for about 3.1% of total sales, down slightly from 20,092 vehicles in the previous quarter, but up about 19.7% from 16,266 vehicles in the same period last year.

Data shows sales of both the Lyriq and Hummer EVs are up, and deliveries of the Blazer and Silverado EVs have begun, albeit in extremely limited quantities. In addition, Hummer electric vehicles performed well this quarter. The model sold 2,028 units in the fourth quarter, almost double the 1,167 units sold in the previous quarter and only 72 units in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the Lyriq has shown similar growth trends, with General Motors selling a total of 3,820 Lyriq models in the quarter, up from 3,108 in the third quarter and 86 in the same period last year.

However, due to the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Bolt in December, quarterly sales of this model fell, falling to 12,551 units from 15,835 units in the third quarter. This figure was also down from 16,108 units in the fourth quarter of 2022.

General Motors says this is part of a plan to phase out the Bolt so that it can focus on the Alteon platform.

General Motors has begun production of an SUV version of the Hummer electric vehicle at its Plant Zero in Michigan, the company’s spokeswoman Nicole Schmitz said. The Detroit News reported Monday that the vehicle was delivered by the end of the first quarter, which matches GM’s official statement that the SUV will be available “in early 2023.

This production is for the SUV version, and GM already began delivering the truck version of the Hummer EV in December 2021. in October 2022, GM announced that it had built 782 Hummer EVs during 2022 and said it had about 90,000 pre-orders for both the truck and SUV versions. Last summer the Wall Street Journal reported that GM was only building about 12 Hummer EVs per day. GM expects to produce the Hummer EV series at a much faster pace than last year.

The Hummer EV provides a single motor, dual motor, three-motor power system, the maximum power can exceed 1000 horsepower, the maximum torque can exceed 15592N・m, 100 km acceleration in 3 seconds or less, with the acceleration performance of the supercar. In addition, the car also has a “Crab Walk” mode, which enables four-wheel steering and is equipped with an adaptive air suspension system to provide strong passing performance. In terms of the most interesting charging range, the Hummer EV will be equipped with GM’s latest Ultium battery pack with a capacity of 50-200kWh, which can be used with 350kW high-speed charging piles to add 160km of range in 10 minutes, and some models can have a range of around 640km.

On Wednesday local time, U.S. automaker General Motors said that since the total number of orders for the Hummer pure electric pickup truck and Hummer pure electric SUV has exceeded 90,000, from Thursday local time, the Hummer electric pickup truck and Hummer electric SUV will be sold. No longer accepting reservations.

It is reported that the Hummer pure electric pickup truck and SUV are pure electric vehicles launched by the GMC division of General Motors, and the price is between $85,000 and $111,000. GM said production of the Hummer all-electric pickup truck and all-electric SUV has been scheduled until 2024.

Closing the reservation channel is also a way for GM to focus on fulfilling existing orders. GM said it plans to close reservations for both vehicles starting Thursday. Anyone who still wants a Hummer EV will have to pre-order by Wednesday.

GM has been slowly ramping up production of the Hummer electric pickup since earlier this year. As of the end of June this year, the company had delivered fewer than 400 Hummer electric pickups. Deliveries of the Hummer electric SUV are expected to begin in early 2023.

Duncan Aldred, GM’s global head, said the Hummer electric SUV should be produced faster than the electric pickup, which is the first consumer-grade vehicle to use GM’s next-generation Ultium battery and vehicle platform. car.

“We know this year is going to be a slow ramp-up. But next year it will normalize,” he said at the Detroit Auto Show last week. “When we make SUVs, there should be a massive acceleration… Next year is a big year for the Hummer EV, whether it’s a pickup truck or an SUV.”

GM is following in the footsteps of Ford in making this decision. Ford previously closed preorders for the F-150 electric pickup as orders had reached about 200,000 units. Ford also closed reservations for the Mustang electric SUV, but has since reopened it to consumers.

According to foreign media reports, as automakers continue to announce that their production is affected by supply chain or semiconductor shortages, or even have to suspend production, for the electric version of the GMC Hummer such as equipped with a huge battery pack of vehicles, the current is perhaps the most difficult time to enhance production capacity.

GM is reportedly currently only able to produce the new electric version of the Hummer at a rate of 12 vehicles per day, far below the current capacity of other manufacturers. GM admits that production is ramping up more slowly than usual because they are producing the new model on an all-new platform.

GM says the slower pace at which the model is being produced is to ensure that it achieves the level of quality the company is aiming for. The company expects production of the electric Hummer to ramp up significantly in the second half of the year as the new Ohio battery plant, a joint venture between GM and LG Chem, begins producing batteries. Currently, the batteries used in the model are shipped from outside the United States by LG Chem.

Commenting on the 77,000-unit order for the electric version of Hummer and the slower capacity ramp-up, a GM spokesperson said, “As we vertically integrate our production of electric cells, our ability to meet market demand will increase. Vehicle deliveries will ramp up from the hundreds to the thousands later this year.”

In addition to the Ohio battery plant, GM and LG Chem will build another joint venture plant, which is expected to be located in Spring Hill, Tennessee, at a cost of $2.3 billion and is expected to be completed in 2023. With these two battery superplants, GM will be able to meet its demand for batteries. GM expects to launch a total of about 30 all-electric models across all of its brands by 2030.
