According to AFS, the global automotive industry cut production of 4.5 million new vehicles in 2022 due to chip shortages. Looking ahead to 2023, the chip shortage will continue to affect car production, with production cuts expected to reach 3 million vehicles. The automotive chip market is growing faster than other sectors, including smartphones and data centers. Modern cars need more chips, and these chips are more expensive than ever. Due to strong demand, automotive chips are expected to be one of the few segments of the chip industry with severe shortages throughout this year.

But there is also news on the positive side, the chip manufacturing giant TSMC recently said the trend of tight supply is expected to ease. TSMC CEO Wei told analysts on a conference call: “Automotive demand continues to grow and we may still not be able to supply 100% of the wafers they need at this time, but the situation is improving. We expect the shortage to ease soon and expect automotive shipments to grow again this year.”

Recently, by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and the China Society of Automotive Engineering guidance, Huawei cloud and the Institute of Machinery Industry Information jointly organized the “cloud growth, the wisdom of the future” automotive industry, the number of smart upgrade summit held in Suzhou, the meeting, Huawei cloud released the “1 + 3 + M + N” global automotive industry cloud infrastructure layout, to accelerate the automotive industry intelligent and networked.

Specifically, “1+3+M+N” means

Global 1 Automotive Storage and Computing Network: Huawei Cloud Global Automotive Storage and Computing Network is a distributed cloud infrastructure with global coverage and a unified architecture, creating a 30ms (millisecond) latency coverage circle to meet the different latency requirements of enterprise business and enabling global deployment of Telematics. Currently, Huawei Cloud Global Storage and Computing Network KooVerse covers 75 availability zones in 29 geographic regions around the world, providing services to customers in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide.

3 mega data centers to build an automotive zone: In China, Huawei Cloud relies on 3 mega cloud core hubs in Ulanqab, Gui’an and Wuhu to build a green, efficient, secure and compliant automotive zone.

M distributed Telematics nodes: Huawei Cloud cooperates with China Unicom and other operators to build multiple distributed Telematics nodes in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities to support the efficient uploading of Telematics data to the cloud.

N automotive-specific data access points: Huawei Cloud has planned and built more than 50 automotive-specific data access points across the country to ensure 24-hour access to the cloud for autonomous driving R&D data.

At the meeting, Huawei Cloud also released a number of innovative solutions in supporting the upgrade of automotive and vehicle enterprises’ data intelligence.

In the field of autonomous driving, Huawei Cloud works with industry partners to provide end-to-end autonomous driving R&D solutions for automotive enterprises and autonomous driving algorithm companies to support the business closure of autonomous driving data.

First, for the massive data of the autonomous driving business, Huawei Cloud joins hands with partners to build more than 50 dedicated data access points for automobiles nationwide to support 24-hour data uploading to the cloud. After the cloud, the massive data storage can reduce the cost by 50% through Huawei Cloud’s three-tier linkage storage solution.

Second, for AI algorithm training, Huawei Cloud AI development production line ModelArts supports end-to-end training efficiency improvement; distributed multi-level caching technology can shorten the training time by 50%; for large-scale cluster training, topology-aware scheduling and dynamic soft routing technology can improve training performance by 30%.

In addition, for the security compliance of autonomous driving, Huawei Cloud jointly builds an autonomous driving zone with graphical vendors, which can realize exclusive deployment and physical isolation; at the same time, Huawei Cloud jointly partners to provide customers with the whole process of security compliance services.

In the field of intelligent networking, Huawei Cloud released a distributed Telematics solution to support the deployment of distributed Telematics nodes in hotspot cities such as North, Shanghai and Guangzhou to achieve a 10 ms delay circle covering hotspot areas, while Huawei Cloud provides a Tb-level cloud backbone to support high-speed Telematics data into the cloud.

In addition to innovations in distributed Telematics and autonomous driving, Huawei Cloud also released a software-defined car solution that enables car-cloud collaboration and helps car enterprises build next-generation automotive application development platforms; it also released a digital platform solution for car enterprises, which supports car enterprises in five areas: multiform unified cloud platform, technology service platform, software development platform, digital intelligence integration platform, and security and governance platform. The solution will support car enterprises to build digital platforms more quickly and accelerate the upgrade of car enterprises’ digital intelligence.

Panorama of Huawei Cloud’s automotive industry solutions

At the meeting, Huawei Cloud also joined Great Wall Motors, BYD, Chinese Express and dozens of other autonomous driving industry partners to launch the “Create an Open Industry Chain Action Initiative for Automated Driving”.
