In terms of system version changes, Samsung is undoubtedly the leader in the Android lineup. Samsung announced in 2019 that it was the first manufacturer to promise to provide 3 generations of Android version updates for mid-range and flagship models; Samsung then extended the support plan to 4 generations, which created a precedent in the Android camp.

Under the leadership of Samsung, OnePlus also recently announced that it will provide 4 generations of Android version updates for phones, and provide an additional year of security updates. While extending the device support cycle, Samsung is also accelerating product version changes.

As of December, more than 40 Galaxy phones have deployed Android 13 / OneUI 5 updates, and the number of such product updates has far exceeded that of other Android phone manufacturers.

Samsung’s past Android version changes are usually concentrated in high-end models. Samsung will focus on the Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy Z series until 2022. These high-end devices will be released in the same year as the major Android version update, while mid- and low-end models will be launched next year.

However, Samsung has changed its update strategy in 2022. It can be frequently seen that Samsung devices are upgraded to Android 13 / OneUI 5.0. And new devices are being upgraded to Android 13 almost every day. In addition to the Galaxy S series flagships, models like the Galaxy A22 5G and Galaxy M33 5G have also received upgrades.

A few Samsung camera features from the latest Galaxy S22 series will be incorporated into older Samsung phones. That includes selected phones of the Galaxy S, Note and Z series.

There are usually a few unique features that come with each new Galaxy S model. However, only a few of these features are reliant on the device’s advanced hardware, so even older models may be able to benefit from them. The updates will roll out by this month. Additionally, a few of the older models will get the updated camera features only by the month of June.

Improved night portrait

Using the telephoto lens on a Galaxy S22 phone and Portrait Mode, you can capture stunning night images. The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Z Fold 3 will all have this feature.

Improved auto-framing feature

Users can zoom in and out and crop things automatically to get multiple objects in the frame in a good spot. This feature is currently available on Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series. The Galaxy S21 will soon feature the same.

Video call app extension support and auto-framing effects

Video calling apps like Duo, Google Meet, Knox Meeting, Messenger (Meta), Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Zoom, BlueJeans, Webex Meetings, and KakaoTalk will have the ability to use custom backgrounds. This will include microphone controls too. Additionally, Samsung promises to include its auto-framing feature for video calls too.

The Galaxy S20 and S21 families will receive this support. Their respective FE variants, the Galaxy Note 20 series, all Galaxy Z Flip models, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Fold 3 will all receive this too. In addition, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and Note 10 smartphones will have the feature by the end of June.

Camera quality improvements for third-party cameras and social apps

Samsung will enable the use of its camera system for the optimisation of third party social media apps. This includes apps like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, etc. Additionally, the update will be available on the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3.
