Over the weekend, Samsung officially shared a two-minute in-factory video showing how the new Galaxy Z Fold4 / Galaxy Z Flip4, announced earlier this month, passed a series of official feature tests. But for the average consumer, it’s more interesting to know how durable the new generation of folding screen smartphones will be for long-term use. With that in mind, JerryRigEverything, a well-known oil pipe channel, was quick to get its hands on a Galaxy Z Fold4 and put it through a series of violent tests.

Based on the channel’s classic testing process, the Galaxy Z Fold4 was put through its paces with knife scratches, fire and mud spills along the way.

Despite leaving a number of scratches and burned pixels, JerryRigEverything believes it passed the test as well as the last two generations of Galaxy Z Fold models.

Since the release of the initial folding screen smartphone, Samsung has reportedly been working to improve the durability of the device, introducing features such as water resistance and a more robust aluminum screen frame for it.

Yet the Galaxy Z Fold3 / Galaxy Z Flip3, launched last year, still received complaints including screen breakage and overly visible creases shortly after its sale.

While everything is probable, consumers obviously don’t want to be the unlucky ones. Reports on social media indicate that some users’ Galaxy Z Flip3s have developed severe cracks in the creases after prolonged use.

BBC tech editor Zoe Kleinman, for example, has seen her Galaxy Z Flip3 become unusable on both the top and bottom halves of the device, and some users on Reddit have also reported the same problem months after purchase.

In fact, back in 2019, Samsung delayed the release of the initial Galaxy Z Fold folding screen smartphone due to a screen defect.

So even though the Galaxy Z Fold4 is officially claimed to have “durable and incredible technology” and the Galaxy Z Flip4 is described as having “excellent durability and allows for bending and flipping at will,” potential consumers are concerned. Potential consumers still have concerns in this regard.

Under ideal laboratory conditions, a sustained folding life of 200,000 cycles is a real eye-catcher. But with extended daily use, the wear and tear is much more unpredictable.

Thankfully, Samsung has reduced the cost of in-warranty screen replacement for the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Galaxy Z Flip4 to $29 — provided you purchase the official Care Plus service (which ranges from $8 to $11 per month, depending on the device).

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is available for purchase this Friday, August 26, but if you’re not a fan of the pre-installed Android 12L / OneUI 4.1.1, you can actually transform it into a classic Windows Phone interface with the help of third-party software. Mark Spurell shows off this idea in a new tube video.

(From Mark Spurrell / YouTube)

To do this, you’ll have to go to the Google Play Store, download and install two separate third-party Android launchers.

One of them is Square Home, which replaces the Galaxy Z Fold4 with a Microsoft Metro-style tiled theme.

Win-X Launcher, on the other hand, can change the foldable, tablet-style internal screen into a more modern Windows 10 desktop look.

I Turned My Z Fold 4 Into a Windows Phone – Mark Suprrell (via)

As simple as it sounds, the actual hands-on focus was on how to get the two launchers to work together.

To do this, Spurrell downloaded the Bixby Routines app and set it to automatically switch to Win-X Launcher when opening the 7.6-inch internal screen

Of course, to play this game, you’ll have to pay $1,800 for a Galaxy Z Fold4.

Finally, Android Central suggests that Microsoft may bring back more of a Windows Phone era feel to the next-generation Surface Duo.

Android 12L brings several new features that improve the experience of using multitasking on larger screen devices, while there is also a new taskbar layout similar to the one found on PCs. It also supports new swipe gestures, and Samsung has announced that it will team up with Google and Microsoft to bring an enhanced software experience to the device.

Other than that, this is Samsung’s most rugged Galaxy Z Fold model and also supports IPX8 waterproof rating, Wi-Fi 6, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 5.2, AKG Dual Yang, NFC, IPX8 waterproof, S-Pen, dual nano-SIM, closed 155.1 x 67.1 x 15.8mm, unfolded 155.1 x 130.1 x 6.3mm.

On August 10, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 two folding screen phone. Immediately after August 11, Motorola and Xiaomi also launched Moto Razr 2022 and MIX Fold 2 folding screen phone respectively. Although they are folding screen phones, SLASH GEAR today reported that Samsung folding screen phone hinge technology is more backward.

The importance of the phone hinge is reportedly not only in the ability to allow the phone to fold, but also in the curvature, durability and reliability of the folding screen. So far, Samsung has been using a more traditional hinge solution that leaves a noticeable gap when the phone is folded, thus allowing the phone to use a flexible panel with less curvature. Samsung’s recently released Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 uses this traditional scheme.

Xiaomi, Huawei and OPPO have adopted a new waterdrop hinge solution, which allows the screen bend area to sink into the phone’s body when folded, forming a waterdrop shape. Waterdrop hinge solution can make the phone folded gap is smaller, the current market consumers are also more satisfied with this.

But Samsung found in the research and development stage, that the use of a water drop hinge will let the phone give up IPX8 level of waterproof, and can only do life waterproof. Therefore, in order to retain the IPX8 level of waterproof, Samsung still uses the traditional hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4.

The company’s main business is to provide a wide range of products and services to its customers, including the MIX Fold 2.

In addition, the Motorola Moto Razr 2022, which also has a water-drop hinge, is only water resistant to life, and does not support IPX8.

In time for next Wednesday (August 10), the Dutch Amazon website seems to have revealed many details of the Galaxy Z Fold4 smartphone ahead of schedule. The list shows that the device will maintain its 7.6 / 6.2-inch internal and external screens, and both support a high refresh rate of 120Hz. It also appears that the new device has an adjusted stylus storage slot compared to the original Galaxy Z Fold3 case.

For the color scheme, Amazon Netherlands lists a new Beige color, but it may actually be more than that.

Another image also shows a black (Black) / dark gray (Dark Gray) version, but the case of the new S Pen stylus appears to be gray + with a hint of green.

Software-wise, although not explicitly listed on the site, the photos look to have many similarities to Android 12L with the high school (Google announced last year that it was promising to bring an Android 12L update to folding screen devices).

The difference lies in the few buttons attached to the taskbar, so bear with us for the official announcement of Samsung’s Unpacked launch event on August 10.

Finally, while Samsung didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment from foreign media, we can still expect to see new products like the Galaxy Watch5 smartwatch and Galaxy Buds 2 true wireless headphones next Wednesday.

Today, Samsung launched a series of preview videos for the upcoming Unpacked event, which will showcase many new products including Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Watch 5, and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The Unpacked event will be held on Wednesday, August 10 at 9:00 p.m. BST, and Samsung is now accepting pre-orders for these new products.

The tagline for the event’s short film reads, “Explore ways to make the next generation Galaxy even better than your current phone and get ready to embark on a journey to a better experience at the Samsung Unpacked Conference”. There are rumors that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will have an updated design with a single hinge design instead of the dual hinge of previous generations of Samsung foldable phones. The new hinge will be smaller for a thinner, lighter design, and the smartphone will continue to fold like a book.

The Z Fold 4 is expected to continue to feature a 7.6-inch internal display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and it will likely have an under-screen fingerprint sensor instead of the one on the right side of the device. Upgraded cameras are coming soon, including a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom, a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. the Galaxy Fold 3 retails for $1,800, and display analyst Ross Young says the Fold 4 could see a small price cut.

As for the Galaxy Z Flip 4, it will continue to feature a vertically folding 6.7-inch display, but according to Young, it will have a larger 2-inch cover display. Not much else is known about the Z Flip 4, but camera improvements are possible, as are improved battery life and new color options. The two new smartphones are expected to run the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus chip.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, Z Fold4, new Watch5 series, and new Galaxy Buds will launch in three weeks, with an Unpacked event scheduled for August 10. However, behind the scenes retailers are already gearing up for the start of sales, with one of them unexpectedly t announcing pricing information.

One thing to note is that there doesn’t seem to be a 1TB Z Fold4 available, contrary to some rumors. In any case, here is a table comparing the price of the new Z Fold4 with the listed price of the Z Fold3.

As far as we can see from Geekbench, the Series 4 won’t have more RAM than their predecessors, which means 12GB for the Fold, although nothing definite, especially for the top-of-the-line 512GB capacity Flip, but we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, the price will be slightly higher than last year’s similar model.

Next up is the upcoming release of a TWS earbud – retailers list them as “Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro” (R510), which means this is the start of a new generation.

The base price is listed at €226, with some discounts applied to bring it down to €214. For comparison, the initial generation of Buds Pro was launched in January last year at 230 euros.

Galaxy Buds 3 Pro will be available in three colors (at least). White, Gray, and Purple. There’s no “beige” to go with the new Galaxy Z Fold4 colorway, at least not on this list.

Samsung is reconfiguring the cover and internal display aspect ratios for the fourth-generation Galaxy Z Fold (to be launched on August 10). The cover display will change from 24.5:9 to 23:9, and judging from this image shared by Ice Universe, the company has also found a way to slightly reduce the bezels.

Comparison images show the Vivo X Fold (top), the new Galaxy Z Fold4 (middle) and the Galaxy Z Fold3 (bottom), with both vertical and horizontal bezels slimmer than those of the upcoming Z Fold.

One more thing to note in this image – the hinge profile is noticeably different, with the Fold4 being more compact and rumors suggesting that the new hinge has been redesigned to allow for smaller creases.

Back to the aspect ratio, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 body will be thicker, thus giving apps more horizontal space on the cover display and making the upper part of the display more accessible, so the internal display will also be slightly closer to square, going from a 6.25:5 aspect ratio to 6:5. Samsung has promised to release some official teasers in the three weeks leading up to the Unpacked event. We expect we’ll get some confirmation on the display and hinge rumors.

This comes after the first official renders of the Galaxy Z Fold4 (and Z Flip4) were leaked. FYI, fans in the US can already pre-order first and will get a $100 store credit for doing so – and up to $200 off if they pre-order both the Galaxy Watch5 and the new Galaxy Buds (both of which will be unveiled at the same Unpacked event).
