Samsung Galaxy Watch is the first Galaxy brand smartwatch released by the company in August 2018, and it was equipped with Tizen OS 4.0.0.0 system. The watch, which has been on the market for five years, recently received a new software update, which mainly improves the stability and reliability of the sensor, and may improve sports and health tracking functions.

It is noticed that the Samsung Galaxy Watch received frequent software updates in the first three years, the most significant of which was in February 2021, when the system was upgraded to Tizen OS 5.5.0.1, bringing many new features and performance improvements. In November 2021, Samsung launched Tizen OS version 5.5.0.2, which added new watch faces, group challenge widgets, longer calendar synchronization, and more. At the time, many users thought this was the last update for the Galaxy Watch, but Samsung surprised users last August by rolling out GPS stability improvements for the device, making GPS tracking more accurate.

And now, nearly five years after the device hit the market, Samsung has released another software update for the Galaxy Watch. The official changelog doesn’t specify what the update will be, but simply mentions improvements in sensor stability and reliability. Still, for a watch released in 2018, receiving an update in mid-2023 is commendable in itself.

It is reported that this update has already been pushed in some markets, including the United States and Europe. The new firmware version is R8**XXU1GWE2, and the OTA package size is a little over 34MB. Users can receive update notifications through the Galaxy Wearable app on a smartphone connected to the watch, or they can manually check for updates in the watch settings section of the app.

It’s worth noting that this update comes a month before Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy Watch 6 series. It is reported that Samsung is preparing to launch two new smartwatches, one of which is a classic style with a physical rotating bezel. The new watch will be unveiled in late July alongside a new folding screen phone and flagship tablet.

Citing foreign technology media thetechoutlook reported that the model “EP-QR900” wireless charger has passed the FCC certification and tested the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active in 5W mode.

Samsung currently has several wireless chargers in its portfolio, including the Wireless Charging Stand and Duo-Fast Wireless Charger Pad, which according to the FCC certification document is a low-power transmitter under DCD-Part 15 classification – 1705 kHz.

The FCC certification document also provides some test reports for this wireless charger. The charger is equipped with a 5V power supply, 5W operating mode and Loop Coin antenna. The frequency range is 143.5 ~ 146.5 kHz, PCB version 1.0, H/W version 1.0 and S/W version 3.6. It is supposed to be a wireless charger specifically for Samsung smartwatches.

According to a fresh claim, Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy Watch 5 lineup may include a new ‘Pro’ model. Samsung released two different Galaxy Watch 4 models last year. This year, Samsung will expectedly introduce a new series. It will provide buyers with an upgraded design and functionality.

Samsung’s future smartwatch’s codenames surfaced within the Samsung community forums. These codenames suggest that a Galaxy Watch 5 “Pro” variant is in development. The finalized names of the variants may vary. “Heart-S,” “Heart-L,” and “Heart-Pro” are the three codenames as reported by GalaxyClub. It is indeed difficult to decipher information from the codenames themselves, but the source has linked these codenames to model numbers.

Galaxy Watch 5 variants

As per the source, the codename for model SM-R90x is Heart-S, while the codename for model SM-R91x is presumably Heart-L. Additionally, the codename for model number SM-R92x is Heart-Pro.

The Heart-S codename is presumably the given name for the most compact 2022 smartwatch variant. Its size will range from 40mm to 42mm. The Heart-L codename presumably corresponds to the larger Galaxy Watch 5 model. Additionally, its size will be 44mm or 46mm.

The “Heart-Pro” is the most advanced variant of the three. Earlier, “Galaxy Watch 5 Pro” was the expected name of this variant. It’s safe to say that whichever name ultimately comes up, this watch will incorporate advanced features.

A massive 572mAh battery will allegedly power the Pro version of the smartwatch. This is an improvement, up from the 361mAh battery capacity of the 46mm Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. To put into perspective, there will be an almost 60% increase in capacity on the upcoming watch. A 572 mAh battery would probably provide less than two days of battery life for most users who will use it intensely. Additionally, if users do not turn on all the features, the battery will probably make it past 48 hours of use with a battery of this capacity. The non-Pro models are also expected to get equipped with batteries that have a long battery life.

Samsung will presumably equip the smaller “Heart-S” Galaxy Watch 5 variant with a 276 mAh rated capacity battery. This is an improvement when compared to the 247 mAh, 40mm non-Classic Galaxy Watch 4.
